Liverpool 0-2 Paris Saint-Germain result: Ousmane Dembélé brace knocks Liverpool out as PSG reach UEFA Champions League semi-finals

Ousmane Dembélé’s second-half brace consigned Liverpool to a Champions League exit as the defending champions eased through to the last four.

Paris Saint-Germain came into the second leg at Anfield with a two-goal advantage following their dominant performance in Paris, and delivered another classy and composed performance in the face of a big Anfield atmosphere.

A fired-up Liverpool threw their best at the French champions, with Virgil van Dijk going closest when his follow-up effort was brilliantly blocked on the line by PSG skipper Marquinhos.

But Arne Slot, who had gambled by starting the half-fit Alexander Isak in attack, was forced to turn to Mohamed Salah earlier than intended when Hugo Ekitike suffered what looked like a serious injury.

And Liverpool’s tough night took another frustrating turn after the break, when a penalty for a foul on Alexis Mac Allister was overturned after a VAR review, just when the home side had their tails up.

The search for a comeback saw the hosts become increasingly open, and it proved their undoing, as Dembélé took advantage of the space to open the scoring with a gorgeous strike from the edge of the box on 72 minutes.

And, with the tie over as a contest, the Frenchman underlined PSG’s dominance with a second on the break, wrapping up a 2-0 away win and sealing a 4-0 aggregate victory.

PSG will face the winners of the tie between Bayern Munich and Real Madrid, who meet in Germany for the second leg on Wednesday evening.

Tonight was the last chance Liverpool had of turning this season into something special, and now their sole focus will be on securing that fifth and final Champions League qualification spot in the Premier League. They have the advantage in that race as things stand, but it’s far from wrapped up. The summer debrief will be interesting. Should Arne Slot continue as coach? The debate will certainly be had on that.

Paris Saint-Germain weren’t quite as good tonight as in the first leg, but they were still dangerous throughout, kept Liverpool largely where they wanted them, and showed their cutting edge in attack. It looks like Ousmane Dembélé is hitting his best form at just the right moment too. On this evidence it is the defending champions who are the team to beat in the competition.

PSG have an extremely vocal away contingent, and their party continues as the French champions head towards the final four. The rest of Anfield is slowly emptying.

It’s another from the Ballon d’Or winner Ousmane Dembélé as PSG carve Liverpool apart on the break, with the Frenchman providing the final touch after Kvaratskhelia and Barcola combine to put it on a plate. There’s a VAR check for offside, but the goal stands. It’s 2-0 on the night, 4-0 on aggregate, and PSG are going to take some stopping in this competition.

Konate has been really good for Liverpool tonight and makes another perfectly-timed challenge to deny Barcola, who was dancing his way through the Liverpool defence. Had Konate not made that challenge it could easily have been a second of the night for PSG.

It’s been a tricky first season at Liverpool for young full-back Kerkez, but he’s clearly a decent talent and shows his attacking side with a dangerous shot on the turn that forces a save out of the keeper.

The Liverpool players and fans are going through the motions, but they know that this tie is over. They threw plenty at PSG tonight, but have been second best across the two legs.

In tonight’s other match, Barcelona need a goal in stoppage time, but are down to ten men.

Zaire-Emery is replaced by Beraldo, but it’s unlikely to have much impact – this game looks to be fizzling out, with PSG coasting towards the semi-finals.

That goal has sucked the atmosphere out of Anfield, with the home side now needing three goals without reply to even force extra-time.

Jones replaces MacAllister in Liverpool’s fifth and final change of the night.

It’s heartbreak for Liverpool but pure brilliance from Paris Saint-Germain forward Ousmane Dembélé . The visitors break and work the ball to Dembélé outside the box. There looks to be good defensive cover, but he feints to make space for the shot and then curls a gem of an effort beyond the reach of the keeper. It’s 1-0 on the night, but more importantly it’s now 3-0 on aggregate. Surely that’s tie over now.

Ngumoha has such a positive mindset and he drives to the edge of the box before unleashing a curling effort that Safonov gets across to well. It’s a nice save and a good hit from the youngster – who is raw but extremely talented. The home crowd love him.

Slot makes his fourth change of the evening, bringing on exciting young winger Ngumoha for Gomez, who only came on at half-time. He must have picked up a knock, as it was initially slated to be MacAllister who would be the player to make way.

The referee heads to the monitor, sees what looks like MacAllister looking for contact and going to ground a bit easily, and decides to overturn the decision. That is a debatable one, and the home crowd are raging.

MacAllister goes down in the box as Liverpool look to unlock PSG and the referee points to the spot. PSG’s players protest immediately. There was contact, but it’s extremely soft.
