REAL MADRID ELIMINATE MANCHESTER CITY FOR THIRD CONSECUTIVE SEASON
Real Madrid eliminated Manchester City from the UEFA Champions League for the third consecutive season, winning 5-1 on aggregate.
Los Blancos won 2-1 on the night, with Vinicius Junior finding the net twice either side of an Erling Haaland strike.
Alvaro Arbeloa’s side will now face either Bayern Munich or Atalanta in the next round, with Vincent Kompany’s team currently leading 6-1 on aggregate before the second leg on Wednesday.
Manchester City came out of the blocks firing but they could make the most of their early pressure.
Rodri and Rayan Cherki both forced Thibaut Courtois into saves, but the Belgian was able to comfortably deal with both efforts.
Disaster then struck for City after 20 minutes as Bernardo Silva was sent off for handball and Real Madrid were awarded a penalty, following a VAR review.
The linesman had originally given Vinicius Junior offside, but the replay showed he was onside and Bernardo had used his arm to block his strike that was heading in.
The Brazilian stepped up and made amends for last week’s penalty miss, sending Gianluigi Donnarumma the wrong way.

Despite being 4-0 down on aggregate, City kept going, and it was Haaland who got one goal back, poking the ball into the far corner, after some brilliant play by Jeremy Doku.
City continued to push throughout the second half, but Real Madrid defended resolutely throughout and ultimately had too much across the two legs before Vinicius added another in added time.
The Blues will need to bounce back quickly, with Arsenal up next in the final of the Carabao Cup, while Real host rivals Atletico on Sunday.
