YAMAL STUNS NEWCASTLE AS LAST-GASP PENALTY RESCUES DRAW FOR BARCA
Lamine Yamal scored a penalty with the final kick of the match as Barcelona rescued a 1-1 draw with Newcastle United in a frantic UEFA Champions League last-16 first leg battle at St James' Park.
Home manager Eddie Howe had described the meeting as the biggest match in Newcastle's history as they chased a repeat of their famous 3-2 win over the La Liga leaders in the 1997 Champions League when Faustino Asprilla netted an epic hat-trick.
And they looked set to complete another rousing victory over Barca when Harvey Barnes arrived unmarked in the 86th minute to convert a cross from Jacob Murphy.
But despite dominating the second half, the home side were caught by a sucker punch in the dying seconds of four added minutes when Malick Thiaw was guilty of sticking out a leg to bring down Dani Olmo as the referee rightly awarded the penalty.
Yamal kept his cool to send Aaron Ramsdale the wrong way from the spot as Barca earned a draw they barely deserved ahead of the return leg at the Camp Nou next Wednesday.

EDDIE HOWE PRAISES NEWCASTLE QUALITY IN BARCA DRAW
"Tough to take," he said on Amazon Prime. "Focusing on the game itself, I thought we were outstanding, and played really well.
"We kept the intensity up for both halves, which is really difficult to do against them, and at the end it taints it in a negative light, but that’s one of our best performances.
"I think it was soft [for the penalty] but Malick made contact.
"I think we had our shape, so there was no way we should concede that goal. I’ll have a look at it, but I don’t want that to override what we did for the 93 minutes beforehand when we played so well.
"Without opening them up for a catalogue of chances, I thought we did enough to score before we did.
"We know we’re going to have to give more going to their stadium.
"We need a great performance, but we have shown many times that we’re capable of doing it.
"But we have to be at our very best, and the players will be super motivated when the time comes."
