Union Saint-Gilloise 0-4 Newcastle: UEFA Champions League result as dominant Magpies cruise to big win in Belgium

Anthony Gordon scored two penalties to help Newcastle to a dominant 4-1 win at Belgian champions Union Saint-Gilloise.

After Nick Woltemade’s flick gave the Magpies the lead, Gordon converted the first penalty after Anthony Elanga was brought down after a mazy run.

Gordon added a second penalty just after half-time, before Harvey Barnes wrapped things up with a counterattacking finish.

It is Newcastle’s first points of this year’s UEFA Champions League and an all-round performance that will fill Eddie Howe with confidence going forward.

Wednesday night's fixtures (all times BST):

A 10/10 performance really. There are about six or seven contenders for player of the match.

Newcastle were solid at the back, creative in midfield and clinical in attack. Yes, they will face sterner tests in this competition and in the league but it still feels like a statement performance.

What will buoy Eddie Howe even more is that the new signings not only played well, but really clicked with the rest of the team.

A perfect response to that bitter defeat to Arsenal last weekend.

One more chance for USG, but Boufal holds onto the ball for too long. They are passing it around Newcastle's defensive third but there is just no way through. Botman clears the cross with ease.

They think they have won a corner, but I think the ball went out of play earlier and it'll be a goal kick instead. And that will be the full-time whistle!

Complete dominance from Newcastle and the perfect evening for Eddie Howe. Woltemade opened things up for the Magpies, before Gordon converted two penalties either side of half-time before Barnes added a fourth off the bench.

Tonali has had so much energy all game. He tries to work something on the edge of the box, but has to find Hall instead.

Hall plays a one-two before squaring to Tonali, but his shot is brilliantly saved from point-blank range!

USG try to come forward again but Sven Botman mops things up. It has been a tidy performance for a player who has really struggled for consistent minutes recently due to injuries.

Again, the Belgian champions are denied a chance to attack, this time it's new signing Malick Thiaw who shepherds Niang out of play.

Another change for Newcastle, this time Fabian Schar for Kieran Trippier.

Trippier will need to be managed carefully for the next couple of months, with Tino Livramento out for eight weeks.

Fantastic counterattack, and Barnes gets on the scoresheet!

Gordon dribbles out from a corner who finds Barnes who plays it forward to Osula. Osula holds the ball up brilliantly, who threads a ball just through to Barnes and the Englishman is able to chip the ball over Scherpen from closer range.

Brilliant team goal.

Barnes gets his first opportunity, but can't find Gordon with the pull-back. He must have been watching the first half wondering how he will ever break into that front three.

This time, Barnes drives inside and plays a one-two with Gordon, but can't quite latch onto the return ball which would have set him through on goal.

USG bring on Louis Patris for his Champions League debut. Off goes Anan Khalaili, arguably USG's best player tonight.

Here come the substitutions for Newcastle, three in total.

Nick Woltemade comes off, having given the Magpies the opener, as does Anthony Elanga, who didn't score, but was excellent all evening.

Bruno Guimaraes also comes off. On come Harvey Barnes, Lewis Hall and Will Osula.
