SPURS BEAT MAN UTD TO WIN 2024/25 EUROPA LEAGUE TITLE
Tottenham beat Manchester United 1-0 in Bilbao on Wednesday to clinch the UEFA Europa League title and qualify for the UEFA Champions League.
17 years on from their last major trophy win in 2008, Brennan Johnson’s scrappy first-half strike made the difference as Ange Postecoglou stuck to his word by delivering a trophy in his second season.
Tottenham and Man Utd both had chances to break the deadlock in the early stages, as both defences began shakily on the big stage. Johnson and Pape Sarr came close to an opener, while Amad Diallo flashed an effort wide for United.
At the end of the first half, Sarr delivered a cross to the front post where the ball popped up for Johnson, who - helped by a deflection off Luke Shaw - managed to guide the ball over the line from close range to give Spurs the advantage heading into the break.
Bruno Fernandes and Alejandro Garnacho tested Spurs' resolve as Ruben Amorim’s side pushed for an equaliser, while Micky van de Ven hooked an unbelievable clearance off the line from Rasmus Hojlund’s header.
Spurs defended excellently, and after a heroic save from Guglielmo Vicario to deny Shaw’s header deep into added time, they sealed their status as Europa League champions.

Man Utd boss Amorim has been speaking to the press following defeat in the final, with the Portugal manager now under immense pressure.
"If the board or fans feel that I’m not the right guy, I will go the next day without any conversation about compensation," he said. "But I will not quit."

POSTECOGLOU REACTS TO 'SECOND SEASON' TROPHY PROMISE
Speaking to TNT Sports, Postecoglou gave his instant reaction to Spurs' victory, as well as keeping his promise to deliver a trophy in his second season.
"I'm still trying to take it all in. I know what it means for this football club and, unfortunately, the longer it goes on, the harder it is to break that cycle sometimes," he said.
"I could sense the nervousness in everybody at the club because they've been in situations before, and until you take that monkey off your back, you never understand what it feels like.
"We've got a really young group, but I'm hoping them tasting that now, and the success they have, you guys will know, it feeds into itself and they feel differently about themselves."
He added: "People misinterpret it [on his quote that he always wins a trophy in his second season], it wasn't me boasting, it was me just making a declaration, and I believed it. At the time I said it, we were still in the Carabao Cup.
"I just had this thing inside me, that more than anything else, and I know our league form has been terrible, nowhere near good enough and unacceptable, but us finishing third wasn't going to change this football club, the only thing that was going to change this football club was us winning something. When I said that, that was my intent."

Despite a memorable night in Bilbao, Spurs are on course for a 17th-place finish in the Premier League, which would be their worst top-flight finish since 1977.

Glenn Hoddle and Ferdinand have been talking about that match-winning clearance from Van de Ven to keep the score at 1-0.
Hoddle said: "That lad can play for any club in the world if he wants to, and I'm so glad that he's at Tottenham with us."
Ferdinand added: "I think it'll go down in folklore... [it was] equally important as the goal."

That's what Rio Ferdinand thinks, who heaped praise on Ange Postecoglou.
"They’ve been the butt of many jokes from other teams about how they can’t win a trophy. But they’ve proved today, they’ve shut a lot of people up," he told TNT Sports.
"And that argument in the pubs and in front rooms all around the country will have to be stopped now, because they’ve proved that they’ve got that monkey off that back now and they can hopefully build on this."
He added: "I’ve got a bit of a soft spot for Ange Postecoglou because I think he’s come in for a lot of criticism, some of it unfair.
"Yes, he’s been prickly at times, but who wouldn’t be, someone under that type of scrutiny and criticism?"

"They will remember this for the rest of their lives for sure," he told TNT Sports.
"They’ll be able to look back on this moment and cherish these memories, there’s nothing like lifting a trophy.

JOHNSON: 'RELIEF IS SOMETHING THAT I CAN NEVER DESCRIBE'
Goalscorer Brennan Johnson has been speaking to TNT Sports after his 18th goal of the season sealed the Europa League for Spurs.
"I can't [explain the feeling]. I'm so happy right now, honestly," the Welshman said. "This season hasn't been good at all, but I swear, not one of us players right now cares about that.
"This is what it's all about. This club hasn't won a trophy in 17 years! Honestly, this is what it means. It means so much. All the fans get battered. We get battered, for not winning a trophy, for not winning anything. We had to get the first one in a while today, and I'm so happy.
"Ever since I came here, it's been 'Tottenham are a good team but can never get it done.' We got it done. I can't describe the feeling.
"[The final few minutes were] horrible. Honestly, I couldn't watch. I was just listening to what the boys were saying, asking how long was left. When we defended that corner at the end, I kind of knew. I was getting told it was done. The relief is something that I can never describe."
