Mason Mount spoke of his relief to get the monkey off his back and score his first goals at Old Trafford after he came off the bench to play a crucial role in Manchester United's 4-1 win over Athletic Club in their UEFA Europa League semi-final. The Red Devils carried a 3-0 advantage back to Old Trafford for the second leg, and Mount scored twice to set Ruben Amorim's side on their way.

Mason Mount said that he "knew something good was going to come" after he scored his first goals at Old Trafford in Manchester United's 4-1 win over Athletic Club in the UEFA Europa League semi-finals.

The midfielder, who arrived in the summer of 2023 for £55 million from Premier League rivals Chelsea, has been blighted with injury since his move to the north-west.

He was restricted to just 20 appearances across all competitions in his first campaign at United under Erik ten Hag, and he has played 21 times this term under both Ten Hag and current manager Ruben Amorim.

The England international had just one goal to his name last year, scoring in United's 1-1 draw at Brentford, and in The Red Devils' recent 4-3 defeat to the west London outfit this season.

Now, Mount's United career seems to have been given the kickstart that it needed, as he stepped off the bench to devastating effect, netting twice and sparking a stirring comeback.

He equalised on the night with a neat Cruyff turn and finish into the far corner on 72 minutes, before he doubled his tally late on in the first minute of stoppage time, capitalising on a loose clearance from visiting goalkeeper Julen Agirrezabala to score from distance into the unguarded net.

Speaking to TNT Sports post-match, it was clear how much the brace meant to the midfielder.

"It’s been difficult since I’ve been here," he said.

"I’ve had the injuries and the setbacks. I always stayed positive and I knew something good was going to come. I carried on going, and tonight, it’s paid off in the semi-finals.

"It [had been] too long. I carried on going, working hard in training every day and trying to stay positive.

"When I had an opportunity like this to come on in games, just try and make an impact. It paid off. It was a tight game when I came on, and I just came on to try and calm it down and make an impact.

"My first goals here at Old Trafford, ones I’ve been waiting for for a long time. A special moment."

On his spectacular second goal, Mount admitted that he had not meant to take it on his weaker left foot.

"As I saw him come out, I was in front of my midfielder," Mount explained.

"I had in my mind that if it comes to me, first touch, and shoot. I didn’t mean for it to go on my left foot. I just tried to get good contact as I saw the defender was quite far from the goal.

"It’s the same with the first; it was instinctual. Get the ball, turn, create half a yard, and hit the back of the net."

Mount's manager Amorim waxed lyrical about the player's work rate and quality.

"I'm so happy for Mason," the Portuguese told TNT Sports.

"He works so hard, he has quality. When you see that kind of guy working hard every day, eating well, resting. Ice baths. He does everything. When you have those kinds of players, you just want to help them.

"And then the quality that he has. He's perfect for that position. He can play as a midfielder, he can run like a winger, he can play with his back to goal.

"I'm really happy for him."

United will play Tottenham Hotspur in the final in Bilbao on May 26, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Spurs did what was required of them in the Arctic Circle, as they beat Bodo/Glimt 2-0 thanks to goals from Dominic Solanke and Pedro Porro.
