Ruben Amorim: Manchester United boss defiant about future after defeat to Tottenham in UEFA Europa League final - ‘I will not quit'

Manchester United's season is ending in fitting fashion. After a miserable Premier League campaign, one in which they have lost 18 matches so far, they were beaten 1-0 by Tottenham Hotspur in the UEFA Europa League final. Despite that, manager Ruben Amorim insists he is the right man to lead the club forward, and stated he has no plans to quit Old Trafford after the final game of the campaign.

Ruben Amorim did his best impression of Leonardo DiCaprio in The Wolf of Wall Street as he insisted he will not be leaving Manchester United, despite their UEFA Europa League final defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.

Brennan Johnson's goal secured Tottenham a 1-0 win in Bilbao, consigning The Red Devils to a trophyless season.

Even worse, it adds to a miserable campaign, one in which they are heading for their lowest finish of the Premier League era.

That has raised the pressure on Amorim, who only took the reins in mid-November, but has won just six of his 26 top-flight matches.

The Europa League therefore gave him a chance to provide supporters with something to shout about, only for United to fall at the final hurdle.

Speaking to TNT Sports post-match, the Portuguese said: "I am confident that I am still the guy. More than [at] the beginning!

"I know that it's going to be tough. I know that we lost against an English team. I know the patience of the fans is going to be really short in the next season.

"But I guarantee that I will not quit. I will not go away. I am really confident, because I know the club, I know what it means to coach this club. I understand what this team needs. I have more tools to do my job."

Amorim took the reins when he replaced Erik ten Hag mid-season, so he is unable shoulder the blame for each of their 18 league defeats.

But The Red Devils have suffered some miserable losses under his guidance especially in the league as they sit in 16th position with a game to go.

Defeat to Spurs was their third in a row across all competitions, failing to score a single goal in the process. But the boss is not looking over his shoulder expecting the sack.

"I am not worried about that," he added. "If [the board] say 'Ruben, it's better to change', I will leave the next day with no compensation.

"I realise so much in my confidence, in the way I do my job, I'm not worried about that.

"The biggest pain is to lose games and to lose this final, and not to give something to the fans and especially my players.

"Whenever they want, I'm really confident in myself and I continue to do my job, if the board wants me."

'I think he needs more time'

The manager has also received the backing of one United legend. Rio Ferdinand was part of the TNT Sports team covering the Europa League final in Bilbao.

He has been watching closely as his former club have suffered defeat after defeat during the 2024/25 campaign.

But the ex-England international believes it is still too soon to judge whether or not Amorim will be a success at Old Trafford.

"I think he needs to be afforded a window," Ferdinand said. "You can't invest in a manager and not give him the ability to shuffle the pack and get some players in that fit the profile of players that he requires to implement his philosophy.

"His way of playing, compared to the past regime, is very, very different [in] formation, and in terms of what he wants them to do in the output.

"It's not like he's a manager who's come in and had to tweak a couple of things because his philosophy and identity was similar to the past regime.

"I think he needs more time. He hasn't had a pre-season. He hasn't had time on the training pitch to coach these players as much as he'd like, I'm sure.

"I think he needs a couple of those things and a recruitment window to then give him real judgement and be as harsh as you want to be.

"There's no doubt, and I think he's said it himself, it's been terrible season. It's been a disaster of a season domestically.

"And then not winning this, after putting all your eggs in this basket, this a disaster as well in this sense.

"Rather than be emotional about it - and there will be a lot of people out there that are, and they're entitled to that - but in the cold light of day, I think he needs some time."

Fellow TNT Sports expert Glenn Hoddle, on the other hand, says it is vital United make a strong start to next season. If not, he believes Amorim will find it tough to keep the wolves from the door.

"I think he will be under pressure if he doesn't start well next year," Hoddle said. "The first 10 games are vital for United next year.

"He didn't really come when he wanted to come. He wanted to come at the end of the season, but they said 'no, it's got to be now.'

"He hasn't had any players that he really feels are his. He hasn't had the time to bed down the system. They've never played three at the back, United, over many, many years.

"He has to look at himself maybe in the summer to say 'in the Premier League, can I make this work?'

"It was different in the Portuguese league, at Sporting. At the end of the day, he's got to look at that first, and then he's got to recruit the players that suit that.

"At the moment, they've got a batch of, apart from [Bruno] Fernandes, really good players. Nothing world class. Nothing special, that particularly this club have always had in their squad."
