Manchester City won their second FA Youth Cup in three years, beating rivals Manchester United 2-1 at Joie Stadium, thanks to goals from Floyd Samba and Reigan Heskey.

The two sides were facing each other in the final of this prestigious competition for the second time, with City coming out on top also in the first, 40 years ago.

The Sky Blues have now completed a League and Cup double, with FA Cup finals still to come for their men's and women’s first teams.

City should have taken the lead after 24 minutes, with top scorer Teddie Lamb denied from point-blank range by goalkeeper Cameron Byrne-Hughes.

Lamb was left unmarked as the ball was headed back across the area following a free-kick, but he could not find a way past Byrne-Hughes.

Dante Headley thought he had won his side a penalty just 10 minutes later when he went down in the box under pressure, but the referee showed the City defender a yellow card for simulation instead.

JJ Gabriel received the same punishment after also going down in the box under pressure.

After a tense 40 minutes, it was City who opened the scoring, with Samba curling a stunning free-kick into the top corner.

However, just 59 seconds later, United were level. Godwill Kukonki ghosted in at the back post to head Jim Thwaite’s cross into the far corner.

City were unlucky not to be awarded a penalty at the start of the second half, with the referee missing a foul on Samba by the United goalkeeper.

The hosts continued to dominate the second half and almost found a late winner with 15 minutes to play, as Ryan McAidoo’s cross was deflected onto the crossbar.

United continued to defend resolutely, but City’s dominance was rewarded in the 88th minute, with Heskey smashing home to secure the trophy.

McAidoo was played through on goal but stayed patient and eventually the ball was worked wide to Heskey, who cut inside and fired into the top corner.

Supporters at the Joie Stadium were delighted as their side completed a memorable League and Cup double.

Speaking to TNT Sports, Harrison Miles said: "Last year was really disappointing, but to win today is amazing. When we played them in the league it was tight. After we scored, they hit back straight away and we had to regroup at the break.

"The two wide players are electric, you just have to give them the ball and you don't know what they are going to do."

Kaden Braithwaite said: "It needed to be done. I am so happy and proud of everyone who contributed. Last year we were disappointed, so we had to make things right. Credit to United, it was a top game from the first whistle.

"We train for this and we had to do what we do best."
