Brazil 1-2 France result - Kylian Mbappe and Hugo Ekitike score as France prevail despite red card in entertaining friendly before World Cup

Goals from Kylian Mbappe and Hugo Ekitike guided France to victory over Brazil in an international friendly before the 2026 World Cup despite a red card for Dayot Upamecano.

A helter-skelter first half produced a host of chances for both teams as Raphinha missed two great opportunities and a Gabriel Martinelli shot missed by inches before Mbappe made them pay when Aurelien Tchouameni dispossessed Casemiro in midfield and Ousmane Dembele launched the ball forwards for Mbappe to chase.

The Brazilian backline (missing the injured Gabriel Magalhaes, Marquinhos and Alex Sandro) couldn’t catch the Frenchman who delivered a delicious dink over stand-in goalkeeper Ederson to open the scoring.

Brazil were unable to respond before half-time but it looked like the match was turning back in the Selecao’s favour when Upamecano shoved over Wesley just outside the penalty area with no players providing cover, and was sent off via a VAR review.

However, another counter produced another French goal when Olise surged forwards and the Brazilian defence didn’t have the cover to mark him, Mbappe and Ekitke - eventually Olise slipped in the Liverpool striker who made no mistake.

Despite calling up the red-hot Joao Pedro and Igor Thiago, Carlo Ancelotti opted not to start an out-and-out striker, instead deploying Vinicius Jr. and Matheus Cunha through the middle.

And the gamble didn’t really pay off, as the Real Madrid star showed flashes on the counter-attack but struggled to test the French defence in more structured attacks until he was moved out wide in the last 15 minutes when Thiago made his debut.

Yet moments after the change, Brazil were back in the contest when Vincius won a free-kick on the right and Bremer turned the ball home after some penalty area pinball, giving Brazil fans hope.

They just needed one more opportunity in the remaining 20 minutes and they got it deep into stoppage time when Bremer disguised a sumptuous pass into the box as a shot from distance. Thiago and Vinicius both got close, but neither could get the decisive touch past Mike Maignan meaning France prevailed.

Brazil have friendlies against Croatia and Egypt before they face Morocco, Haiti and Scotland in Group C while France’s World Cup gets underway against Senegal after only one more warm-up game, versus Colombia.

Northern Ireland's World Cup hopes are over but Wales and the Republic of Ireland are still deadlocked, deep into extra time.

Brazil had one more chance to counter but Kante stopped them with a masterful tackle, then it's full-time!

France get their first win over the Selecao since 2011 and have proved they deserve to be one of the heavy favourites for the World Cup.

Brazil have so much talent to return to the side especially at the back, but will be disappointed with how they responded after Upamecano was sent off when France only led 1-0.

Bremer looks like he's shaping to shoot but instead he plays the ball towards the left post for Thiago or Vinicius.

The striker is just millimetres away from making contact that surely would've turned it past Maignan while the stand-in skipper does make contact, but can't direct the ball goalwards!

Akliouche masterfully wastes time over a free kick and sees yellow, meaning Brazil now have just a few minutes to grab that equaliser.

Brazil's most joined-up attack since their goal gives Bremer a great chance, but his shot is well off target! They'll have seven minutes of added time to equalise.

Deschamps has played his final hand - Maghnes Akliouche and Pierre Kalulu are on.

The Selecao dink the ball over the French defence for Thiago to chase, but he can't get near it with Konate dragging him back, and eventually to the ground.

Yet unbelievably, the referee waves play on!

It's hard to track what Brazil's formation is at this stage, and perhaps that confusion is impacting their lack of fluency right now.

Partly because of the injury stoppage (Rabiot is continuing), the Selecao haven't been able to threaten Maignan's net since the goal. Maybe the introduction of Gabriel Sara for Casemiro will help.

France bypass the first line of the Brazilian press and Rabiot looked set to break through the midfield too until he's felled by a cynical foul by Ibanez.

His delivery is overhit but Casemiro does brilliantly to keep it in play and after some penalty area pinball, Bremer beats Maignan and scores!

They have reacted so well since the red card. However, Ancelotti may be scratching his head tonight as for all their attacking talent, Brazil have struggled to produce clear-cut chances in the second half.

Ancelotti has handed Igor Thiago his debut in place of Cunha alongside Danilo Santos, while Roger Ibanez is on for his fourth cap as Wesley and Andrey Santos make way.

Each team can make six substitutions in this match in three windows, and Brazil are getting ready for another.

In the meantime, Vinicius stands up Gusto and Olise before finding Casemiro, who slips a naughty no-look pass to Douglas Santos.

Brazil only win a corner, but it's another example that they're starting to purr in attack after so many snatched opportunities earlier.

Brazil fire the subsequent free kick straight at Maignan, but they should get plenty of opportunities now they're playing 10 men.

Descamps wasted no time in altering his side - Maxence Lacroix is on for his debut in place of Ousmane Dembele while Tchouameni looks a bit nonplussed when he is withdrawn for N'Golo Kante.

And it looks like the correct call. Wesley had cut across the defender and was sprinting in for a one-on-one, Upamecano was nowhere near the ball.
