MBAPPE EQUALISER KEEPS MADRID TOP OF LA LIGA
Kylian Mbappe’s second-half equaliser kept Real Madrid at the top of La Liga after the Frenchman rescued a 1-1 draw against city rivals Atletico Madrid.
An even first-half burst into controversy after 34 minutes when Aurelien Tchouameni caught the foot of Samuel Lino as both players missed a cross into the box.
Referee Cesar Soto Grado initially waved play on before being called back to the VAR monitor and awarding a penalty.
Julian Alvarez kept calm and exquisitely executed a cheeky panenka to open the scoring.
Real Madrid were relentless in the second half and forced Atletico goalkeeper Jan Oblak into a host of smart saves.
Eventually, Carlo Ancelotti’s side found an equaliser when Jude Bellingham’s effort was saved into the path of Mbappe to score.
Moments later, Bellingham had the opportunity to win the derby, but crashed his header off the crossbar.
Real Madrid travel to Manchester City in midweek for the first game of the knockout phase, and then return to La Liga action against Osasuna next weekend.

LLORENTE: ‘NOT A DECISIVE GAME’
Atletico Madrid defender Marcos Llorente felt their 1-1 draw with Real Madrid will not be decisive in the title race.
"It was important to at least pick up a point here," said Llorente, talking to La Liga TV.
"It was an important game, but not a decisive game; there is still a lot to be played.
"I think we did many positive things. I have the feeling that we could have won it. We had chances, but we weren’t sharp with the last pass.
"We didn't convert those, so it was hard to win the game. At the end, there were a couple of crosses, we could have won the game."

ALVAREZ: ‘WE HAVE TO REMAIN ON SAME PATH’
Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez believes that his side are on the right path as they held Real Madrid to a 1-1 draw at the Santiago Bernabeu.
"They managed to get back into the game and we suffered a bit in the second half," said Alvarez, talking to La Liga TV.
"We tried to win it. We just have to continue on the same path that we’re on."
Atletico Madrid went ahead through a controversial penalty, awarded by VAR, after Aurelien Tchouameni was judged to have fouled Samuel Lino.
Alvarez was the calmest player at the Bernabéu, chipping his penalty down the middle and sending goalkeeper Courtois diving to his left.
"I was a little bit nervous before taking it [the penalty], but I had it very clear in my mind what I was going to do with the ball," Alvarez added.

REAL MADRID REMAIN TOP
A second-half equaliser from Kylian Mbappe was enough for bragging rights to be shared in the Madrid derby.
Real will remain top of La Liga tonight, but sit just a point above Atletico Madrid, who are well and truly breathing down their necks.
Carlo Ancelotti will be the more frustrated head coach this evening after a controversial Julian Alvarez penalty put Atletico into the driving seat.
