Newcastle v Arsenal - Carabao Cup result as Magpies book Wembley spot with four-goal aggregate win over Arsenal

Goals from Jacob Murphy and Anthony Gordon put Newcastle out of sight with a 4-0 aggregate victory over Arsenal to seal their spot in the Carabao Cup final.

Barring their promotion from the Championship in 2017, Newcastle have not picked up major silverware for nearly 60 years, but both performances against Mikel Arteta's side were well-deserving of a shot at ending their trophy drought on an evening in which they dealt with the occasion admirably.

The Magpies went into the second leg at St James' Park with a 2-0 aggregate advantage, and looked to have immediately added to it when Alexander Isak raced through and sunk an emphatic finish just four minutes in, only for his effort to be ruled out for offside.

But Eddie Howe's side did not let that deflate them, as Murphy did extend the aggregate lead to three on 19 minutes, tapping home after Isak struck a thunderous effort off the post.

The Swedish striker and fellow forward Gordon had Arsenal's typically imperious defence quaking under the vociferous atmosphere, running William Saliba and Gabriel ragged as Arsenal's hopes of an unlikely comeback grew distant.

And it was Gordon who ultimately put the tie out of sight, pouncing on some calamitous play out of defence to stroke home just seven minutes after half-time, allowing the home crowd to enjoy the occasion as they saw their side romp to an impressive victory over the Premier League's second-placed side.

In fact, the victory also extends Newcastle's impressive record over The Gunners this season, triumphing in all three of their meetings, while keeping clean sheets in each.

The Magpies will face either Liverpool or Tottenham in the final at Wembley Stadium in March. Ange Postecoglou's side - also looking to spell an end to their own trophy drought - lead 1-0 ahead of Thursday's clash at Anfield.

Bruno Guimaraes spoke to Sky Sports after the full-time whistle about how his side controlled the second-leg tie.

"Unbelievable performance from everyone. Our fans made the difference tonight - they were unbelievable.

"Here we go, another final for this club and I'm hopeful we can win this one.

"I was anxious before; big game, Arsenal are a top, top team. But when we play like that, we become an amazing team. If we can play like that for the season, we can dream big.

"We knew that, if we scored first, it would be amazing for us. Everything was like we planned it.

"Now we celebrate with the boys. I think everyone in the city is very, very happy, so I want to enjoy it a little bit with them."

Anthony Gordon, who scored two of Newcastle's four goals in their aggregate victory, spoke to Sky Sports after helping to seal his side's spot in the final.

"It feels amazing. A proper team performance and we got the win. Our fans are never in question, they make it so difficult for the opposition and we did it the right way.

Few nights will surmise Arsenal's desperate need for reinforcements like their two Carabao Cup semi-final legs against Newcastle, but Eddie Howe's side played the two ties perfectly - and will now enjoy their just rewards with a trip to Wembley.

With it, a chance to end a trophy drought which has dragged on far too long for a club of their stature. But given the way they have played not only in the cup, but in recent months of the Premier League season, they will feel confident they can bring some much-needed silverware to the club.

Their rise is perfectly encapsulated by the impressive form of forwards Alexander Isak and Anthony Gordon, who relieved a huge amount of pressure on their side with simply outstanding performances in both legs against Arsenal.

And particularly at St James' Park this evening, the pair did not give William Saliba or Gabriel a second to breathe. When the script can sometimes be written for a team to come, upset the home crowd and overturn their first-leg deficit, Gordon and Isak made sure that was never on the cards with two decisive contributions - the Swede setting up the first before Gordon put the semi-final out of sight.

And their ability to shine on the big occasions certainly bodes well for their upcoming trip to Wembley, which Magpies fans can now safely look forward to.

Outstanding, simply outstanding from Newcastle who got the better of Arsenal on both occasions, and will now look forward to a trip to Wembley.

He seems to be being deployed as a sort of free-roaming forward in these final minutes. In fairness, he has come up with some stunning goals this season.

A nice move sees Guimaraes tee up a cross with a cheeky no-look through ball, but as Hall bears down to win the header, he's penalised.

Jorginho clips a ball over the top, and Havertz looks to be running onto it. But he goes down in a tangle with Burn, one he clearly stepped into, and the claims will be quickly waved away.

Joe Willock and Emil Krafth are coming on. Botman and goalscorer Murphy exit, to a great ovation from the home crowd.

Riccardo Calafiori and Jorginho enter the fray. Timber and Partey make way. Again, these substitutions will do little to alter their set-up, it's more or less like-for-like.

Almost seems as though Arsenal have lost faith. The gameplan has been superbly executed from the hosts, while it also highlights the pitfalls of the Gunners' lack of January recruitment.

And Newcastle fans will breathe a little easier given their four-goal aggregate lead now. But they have dealt with Arsenal's set-piece threat superbly so far regardless.
