Jarrod Bowen took to social media to apologise to West Ham United fans for the heated incident which took place following their Carabao Cup defeat against Wolves. The skipper went over to applaud the travelling support at full-time but appeared to take offence at something said and had to be ushered away by team-mates. He has since apologised, saying that he "needs to set a better example".

Jarrod Bowen has apologised after nearly clashing with West Ham United fans at full-time following their Carabao Cup defeat at Wolverhampton Wanderers.

After initially going over to applaud the travelling support, the West Ham captain was then stopped by stewards as he appeared to try to vault the advertising hoardings.

The 28-year-old was ushered away by other West Ham players, including Tomas Soucek and Alphonse Areola, after seemingly taking offence at something said.

Shortly after full-time, Bowen posted a statement on his Instagram reading: "Apologies to the fans for tonight's reaction.

"I'm someone who is passionate and will fight every time I step on the pitch. But I need to set a better example and you fans know how much I love you and this club!

"We ride through the bad times together and I'll see you all Sunday."

West Ham came from behind to lead 2-1 at Molineux, but a late brace from Jorgen Strand Larsen handed the east London side a third defeat from their opening three games of the season.

It was also the third successive game in which they conceded at least three times, following their 3-0 and 5-1 Premier League losses against Sunderland and Chelsea, respectively.

Manager Graham Potter, who has now won just five of his 22 matches in charge, conceded after the defeat at Wolves that his side are "in pain".

But the Englishman called for unity following the incident involving his skipper, which he put down to "an exchange of views by people who care".

"We're all in pain, so we need everybody to help," Potter said. "We need everybody's support, we need to push forward and on to the next match.

"The team's suffering at the moment, we all are, we're all hurting. I can assure you no-one's happy.

"I have no idea what was said or anything. Our supporters have been fantastic, they are hurting because of the results we've had and Jarrod obviously cares about the club and the team. It's just an exchange of views by people who care.

"Everyone is hurting, rightly so because we haven't had the results we'd like. Jarrod has been a fantastic captain and servant for the club."

The disappointing start to the campaign marks a continuation of West Ham's poor form from last season.

They finished 14th in the Premier League, ending the season with two wins from their final 11 games.

Up next for Potter's men as they look to put things right is a trip to the City Ground to take on Nottingham Forest in the Premier League before they host Tottenham Hotspur following the international break.
