Manchester City 3-1 Bournemouth result: Omar Marmoush, Bernardo Silva and Nico Gonzalez boost City’s top five bid in Kevin de Bruyne’s final home game

Omar Marmoush scored one of the goals of the season as Manchester City took a giant step towards UEFA Champions League qualification by marking Kevin de Bruyne’s final home game for the club with a 3-1 victory over Bournemouth.

The Egyptian, who missed a crucial penalty in The Citizens’ FA Cup final loss at the weekend, scorched a quite sensational 30-yard thunderbolt into the top corner to open the scoring on 14 minutes.

De Bruyne then blew his big moment when he somehow smashed Marmoush’s cut back against the crossbar from six yards out.

Bernardo Silva did eventually double City’s advantage with a clever near-post effort on 38 minutes before Evanilson hit the post on the stretch.

City were reduced to 10 men in the second half when Mateo Kovacic pulled back Evanilson, but The Cherries soon followed suit after Lewis Cook’s reckless challenge on substitute Nico Gonzalez.

Rodri then made a late cameo off the bench as he returned from eight months out with an ACL injury before Gonzalez lashed in the third.

Bournemouth had offered little but substitute Daniel Jebbison notched a consolation deep into stoppage time following a poor back pass.

It was an action-packed night, but it belonged to De Bruyne, who was given a standing ovation when he was replaced with 21 minutes to go.

The overall picture sees Man City move up to third spot on 68 points, two ahead of top five rivals Newcastle, Chelsea and Aston Villa – and three ahead of seventh-placed Nottingham Forest.  

Realistically, Pep Guardiola’s team now need just a point to reach next season’s Champions League when they finish their season at Fulham on Sunday, while Bournemouth host relegated Leicester City knowing they can no longer achieve a top eight finish.

The Europa League final between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United kicks off at 8pm UK time on Wednesday, May 21.

"A bit weird," he says when asked how he is feeling on Sky Sports.

"It’s been unbelievable to have the 10 years I have had here. It’s been an unbelievable ride. An absolute pleasure, I don’t know [lost for words]."

Asked how he wants to be remembered, he adds: "I wanted to bring joy to people, to play offensive football, [be] creative – that’s what I am on the pitch. And I want to have fun and I think we had a lot of fun in these 10 years."

He continues: "You win, you lose sometimes. It was a joy working really hard and creating something for this club, to make it much better than it was before. I’m super proud."

Asked about his poor first-half miss, he describes it as "terrible" and that his son will give him a hard time for it!  

"Yeah, very professional," he said when summing up Man City's performance on Sky Sports.

"Coming into it, the emotional [side of it] was always going to be there for everyone to see, with it being Kevin de Bruyne's final home game.

"The bigger picture was to get the result and job done tonight with the top five and race for the Champions League - that was so important. This club deserves to be in the Champions League for what they have done in previous seasons.

"A good night all around and the fact Rodri came back is massive - massive."

Pep Guardiola was convinced his side would respond to their FA Cup final defeat and secure the win to move them within a whisker of securing the top five finish they crave.

There was no goal for De Bruyne in his final home match but the Etihad paid tribute and also got to see Rodri return to action for the first time since suffering an ACL injury back September.

City know a win at Fulham on the final day completely guarantees Champions League football next season while Bournemouth’s hopes of finishing in the top eight are over.
