Manchester United 1-1 Arsenal result - Declan Rice equaliser secures point as Gunners lose more ground in title race

Declan Rice’s equaliser gave Arsenal an ultimately disappointing draw against Manchester United on Sunday at Old Trafford.

Arsenal realistically needed a win to keep up their faint hopes of a title challenge after Liverpool beat Southampton 3-1 on Saturday.

United, meanwhile, were not yet certain of avoiding the drop after a woeful season.

Mikel Merino and Leandro Trossard both had good chances to put Arsenal in front as Mikel Arteta again made do without a traditional No. 9 to lead the line.

However, United were able to hold on despite the visitors dominating possession, and in stoppage time in the first half, Alejandro Garnacho won a free kick, which was brilliantly converted by United skipper Bruno Fernandes.

In the second half, Arsenal threw on Myles Lewis-Skelly and Gabriel Martinelli in search of an equaliser, and the pressure told when Declan Rice crashed an equaliser in off a post on 74 minutes.

Both teams had chances to win the match, but Fernandes was unable to beat David Raya at the death, and the two clubs shared the points.

Arsenal remain second, 15 points behind Liverpool with a game in hand, and United are 14th.

Roy Keane comments: "We used to get booed off with a draw. They’re cheered off."

He quickly reassesses, though, and generously offers: "United would have been worried. It's a decent draw."

Arsenal pushed hard and questions will be asked once more about their lack of strikers.

For United, a point does not do much for them either, but that was a much better performance.

Fernandes fires at goal as he arrives late and Raya's fingertips stretch to palm it away after he initially blocks it with his legs, and the ball is scrambled clear.

Martinelli rushes onto a rebound from a Trossard shot, and he blasts it miles over, and Onana's blushes are spared. Martinell is then indicated as offside, so that miss is less meanigfull.

He has the chance to find Collyer to his left, but strikes at goal with an effort that whistles over the bar.

Four minutes of added time are indicated.

Claimed by Raya, after Hojlund was foiled at the near post from a low cross. Arsenal are pressing, but the game is wide open at this point.

Merino loses the ball in a terrible position near his own penalty area, and Hojlund is poised to shoot on goal yards out, only for Rice to sweep the ball away at the last moment with a vital intervention. Hojlund is yet to find a ruthless edge.

Martinelli strikes a fierce, well-taken volley after breaking through into space, but he can't beat Onana at the near post.
