Sandro Tonali: Newcastle confirm midfielder will return to action at end of August after 10-man betting ban

Sandro Tonali will return to first-team selection at the end of August once his 10-month ban comes to an end, Newcastle United have confirmed. The midfielder played 12 times for Newcastle before he was charged after being found guilty of betting on matches during his time in Italy and his short spell in England. He could make his Premier League return against Tottenham on September 1.

Newcastle United have confirmed that Sandro Tonali will be available to return to first-team action at the end of August following his 10-month ban for placing bets on matches.
The midfielder has not featured for the Premier League side since last October when he was charged with betting breaches and sanctioned by FIFA.
The 23-year-old was also given a suspended two-month ban after he admitted to breaching the Football Association’s betting rules in May.
Ahead of the 2024/25 Premier League campaign, Newcastle have announced that Tonali will be available to be selected by Eddie Howe from Wednesday, 28 August once his ban is over.
A statement from Newcastle on Thursday read: "The club has received formal confirmation from the Federazione Italiana Giuoco Calcio (FIGC) that the player’s sporting sanction will run up to and including Tuesday 27th August."
Tonali was the club's marquee signing last summer after joining for a reported £55 million from AC Milan.
The Italy international got off to a dream start with a goal on his full debut in front of the Newcastle supporters as they opened their campaign with a thumping 5-1 victory over Aston Villa at St James' Park.
Tonali made a total of 12 appearances for Newcastle last season before his ban was imposed.
As things stand, he could make his return to Premier League action when the Magpies host Tottenham on September 1.

After returning to the UEFA Champions League stage for the first time in 20 years last season, Newcastle missed out on playing European football for the upcoming campaign after finishing seventh in the domestic table.
Tonali appeared to be a big miss for them as he featured in their opening three Champions League group matches where they picked up four points, before failing to win again once he was banned for the following three games.
Howe's team kick off their campaign this season with a home match against Southampton on Saturday.
Tonali will miss the opener and the next game away at Bournemouth, but could feature in the Carabao Cup tie at Nottingham Forest depending on which day it is played.
He will first be available for Premier League selection for the trip to Tottenham on Septemeber 1.
