The fixture has thrown up several classic matches in the Premier League down the years and here are just some of the very best between the two local rivals.

An emotional night awaits as Goodison Park hosts its final Merseyside derby, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Ahead of the move to their brand-new stadium at Bramley Moore Dock next season, Everton will host arch-rivals Liverpool for the last time at their home since 1892.

Everton will be looking to say farewell on a high, and ease their relegation fears, helped in part with victory here.

For Liverpool, an opportunity to win this final meeting also comes with the incentive of extending their current Premier League lead to nine points.

Since the formation of the Premier League, with neither side being relegated, the two have faced off in each of the prior 32 seasons at the ground, with Everton winning eight times, Liverpool 11, and 13 draws.

These clashes have not been without drama and incident, and here are some of the best from down the years.

Everton 2-0 Liverpool (September 18, 1993) - Reds stars come to blows

One of the all-time most iconic images of the derby comes from this match, with Liverpool goalkeeper Bruce Grobelaar and teammate Steve McManaman involved in an angry tete-a-tete after the former took issue with the latter's defending, which had led to Mark Ward firing the home side in front.

The Toffees, who would only go on to survive relegation on the final day this particular season, managed to get one over their rivals in this early-season clash as Tony Cottee added a second.

Everton 2-0 Liverpool (November 21, 1994) - A Royle ascension

Having already achieved hero status as a player for the club, Joe Royle was tasked with saving bottom-of-the-table Everton, who had just one win from their opening 13 games, when he was appointed manager in 1994.

His first match in charge against third-place Liverpool in the derby saw the perfect start, as Duncan Ferguson scored his first goal for The Toffees and Paul Rideout added a second in a famous win.

Everton 2-3 Liverpool (April 16, 2001) - McAllister ends Reds' derby drought

As crazy as it may seem now, Liverpool struggled when going to Goodison in the 1990s. A 3-2 win in 1990 was their last top-flight away victory against their old rivals - as well as failing to win any of their first eight trips in the Premier League - before this memorable match in 2001.

Emile Heskey’s opener was cancelled out by Ferguson before Markus Babbel restored Liverpool’s lead.

But a missed Robbie Fowler penalty and Igor Biscan’s red card gave Everton hope, and they eventually found an equaliser from the spot through David Unsworth.

With the game heading for a draw, Liverpool were awarded a stoppage-time free kick, from which Gary McAllister brilliantly caught goalkeeper Paul Gerrard cold from 30 yards out to secure the three points.

Everton 1-3 Liverpool (September 15, 2001) - Gerrard stuns Toffees

It would be their 'keeper's namesake who would leave Everton fans miserable the following season when future Reds legend Steven Gerrard scored his first of 10 derby goals in a 3-1 away win.

The late Kevin Campbell had put the Toffees 1-0 up before Gerrard picked the ball up on the edge of the box, shifted it to his right foot away from the defender, and riffled a spectacular shot into the top corner.

Celebrating by cupping his ear to Everton fans, the future Reds captain cemented his hero status at the club early. Goals from Micheal Owen and John Arne Riise sealed the win.

Everton 3-0 Liverpool (September 9, 2006) - Nightmare for Riena

The tide had certainly turned in the fixture with Everton winning just once in the league since 1999 before Liverpool arrived at Goodison for this fixture.

However, the weight of recent history was completely absent as The Toffees raced into a 2-0 first-half lead through Tim Cahill and Andy Johnson.

The game is best remembered, however for the third goal, as Pepe Reina struggled to deal with Lee Carsely’s long-range effort and found himself juggling the ball, allowing a quick-thinking Johnson to pounce and head home from close range.

Everton 2-0 Liverpool (October 17, 2010) - Arteta screamer secures victory

Cahill was to be the scourge of Liverpool once again after putting Everton in front in the first half here.

The points were made safe after the break as Mikel Arteta fired in a stunning effort from the edge of the penalty area for 2-0.

Unbeknown to all at the time, this would be Everton’s last win over their rivals for 11 years and last at Goodison for 14.

Everton 2-2 Liverpool (October 28, 2012) - Suarez dives in

The build-up to this highly-entertaining clash involved Everton manager David Moyes accusing Reds striker Luis Suarez of diving, to which the Uruguayan responded as only he can.

Firing in a shot which deflected off defender Leighton Baines in the first half, Suarez charged towards the Everton bench and threw himself to the ground in both theatrical and comical fashion, right in front of Moyes.

After Suarez added a second, Leon Osman and Stuart Naismith inspired a brilliant quick-fire comeback, with all four goals coming inside 35 first-half minutes.

Everton 3-3 Liverpool (November 23, 2013) - Strurridge the saviour

Another thrilling draw followed a year later. Philippe Coutinho put the visitors in front after five minutes but Kevin Mirallas drew Everton level just three minutes later.

Luis Suarez channelled Gary McAllister with a long-range free-kick to put Liverpool back in front before the break, but a second-half brace from Romelu Lukaku set Everton on the road to victory.

However, not for the first or last time in this fixture, there was late drama as substitute Daniel Sturridge headed in a last-minute equaliser to share the points.

Everton 0-1 Liverpool (December 19, 2016) - Mane of the moment

The late heartache was to be even crueller for Everton on this occasion.

With the clock approaching 94 minutes and the game heading for a 0-0 draw, Sturridge was allowed to work his way into a shooting position from the edge of the penalty area.

Although his effort seemed to lack power, it left Maarten Stekelenburg scrambling and unable to reach the ball before it struck his right-hand post.

With the 'keeper floored, the ball rolled into the six-yard box as Sadio Mane reacted quickest to win the game.

Everton 1-4 Liverpool (December 1, 2021) - Ramapant Reds make history

Liverpool were in ruthless form as they secured their biggest away win at Goodison.

Jordan Henderson and Mohamed Salah put them in a commanding position inside 20 minutes, but Demarai Gray gave The Toffees hope before the break.

There was to be no dramatic comeback like games of the past, though, as Liverpool turned the screw in the second half, Salah and Diogo Jota sealing an emphatic victory.

Everton 2-0 Liverpool (April 24, 2024) - Toffees derail title charge

Liverpool were battling with Manchester City and Arsenal in the title race, while their city rivals were once again involved in a relegation battle.

With both teams desperate for the three points, it would be Everton who struck first as Jarrad Branthwaite saw his first-half shot squirm under the body of Alisson and over the line.

Chances flowed for both sides in a tense evening clash but Dominic Calvert-Lewin’s second-half header propelled Everton towards safety and dealt a damaging blow to Liverpool’s title hopes.

Everyone from the blue half of the city will be hoping for a repeat this time around.
