MANCHESTER UNITED CRUISE TO DOMINANT 2-0 WIN AGAINST 10-MAN TOTTENHAM HOTSPUR TO SOLIDIFY FOURTH PLACE

Goals from Bryan Mbeumo and Bruno Fernandes were enough for Michael Carrick to claim his fourth win as interim boss at Old Trafford.

The win means United go two points behind Aston Villa in third place while Spurs remain 14th and winless in seven Premier League games.

United started brightly as Casemiro tested Vicario in goal early on with a long range effort that was heading for the top corner.

The chances kept coming for the hosts as Matheus Cunha whipped a vicious shot wide of the post before Fernandes bundled a shot wide from the penalty spot.

With 29 minutes on the clock, the game's turning point occurred as Spurs captain Cristian Romero followed through and caught Casemiro on his ankle with his studs up.

Referee Michael Oliver needed little time to think about his decision as he brandished the red card.

Nine minutes later, United exploited their man-advantage and worked a corner well which fell to Mbeumo inside the box to place home the opener.

After the break, the pattern of play was one-sided with United attacking wave after wave but Vicario made a number of good saves to keep them at bay.

In the 58th minute, Xavi Simons had the best chance of the half for the visitors but his effort fizzed wide of the post.

United killed off any chance Spurs had of stealing a point when Fernandes shinned home a half-volley to double the hosts’ lead.

CARRICK: TOO EARLY TO TALK ABOUT HIS FUTURE

United's interim manager believes it is too early to talk about him getting the job on a full-time basis, but wants fans to dream again as United fans.

He told TNT Sports: "When it goes to 10 men it’s always quite a tricky situation. We looked dangerous right from the start of the game which was really pleasing again.

"I thought Tottenham played some really good football first half so we had to solve a few things but with a goal up and 10 men I thought we managed it well, largely in control and always wanting the second goal."

When asked about his long-term future at the club he chose to downplay it.

"It’s not for now. To get carried away as a supporter is where you should be, that's why they come to support us to dream and get carried away."

On Jonny Evans’s instructions for the corner routine: "I wouldn’t say set piece coach, Johnny has been doing a lot of work with the players so that is the reward for that.

"It would take a long time to sum it up, he’s offered the club so much in the time he’s been here since he walked through the door." He said on Fernandes influence.

"He played different roles for us today, he ended up on the left and scored his goal on the left.

"He’s a team player, he gives so much to the group, he’s got big moments in him, we know the quality he has and he cares a lot about the football club."

On whether being out of all of the cups is an advantage: "It kind of works both ways sometimes. Sometimes the rhythm of games can help, sometimes it gets a bit heavy, it can hinder you.

"We’ve got another big game Tuesday night, then rest, recoup and sharpen up after that."

FRANK: ROMERO CLEARLY GOES FOR THE BALL

The Spurs boss has been speaking to TNT Sports after the match and he has revealed that he is proud of his side and feels Romero was unlucky to be sent-off.

He said: "After the red card, I'm very proud of the players, the resilience, staying in the game mentality and still being a threat at times to try and create something.

"I think the last 60 minutes playing with 10 men, they put everything into it, very proud of them, very proud of our fans for travelling in numbers and you could hear them loud through the game."

On if Spurs would have conceded if they had 11 men on the pitch: "No because that was the area they could exploit. It can always happen but that was the area that got more exposed."

On the red card: "Christian, there’s no intention to make a red, he clearly goes for the ball. Unfortunately for him, the way the rule is, it’s then a red.

"Christian apologised to his teammates in the dressing room."

When asked about his depleted squad Frank said: "It is what it is and we'll deal with it."

On takeaways going forward: "A big area we’ve been working on is the resilience. What they showed out there on the pitch was incredible and that’s what we need to build on going to Tuesday night."

On whether they are in a relegation battle: "Just focus on the next game."

FERNANDES: THIS IS A MASSIVE CLUB

The United captain and man of the match has been speaking to TNT Sports after full-time.

He said: "We’ve had moments when we weren't great and it was still like this. When we win games everything looks brighter.

"This is football, football changes from one game to another."

On Carrick he said: "I think Michael came in with the right idea of giving the players the freedom to take responsibility on the pitch to do the decisions that were needed.

"I think he remembers what I told him the last time he was manager. I think Michael could be a great manager and he’s just shown it.

"We hope we can help him even more so everyone can see we are good players. That’s why we are at Man United.

"I think everyone understands the pressure of playing for this club. Everyone knows the expectations around it.

"Michael has won everything here, he knows what it means for these fans and how much is needed to win at this football club."

SEVEN WITHOUT A WIN IN THE LEAGUE FOR SPURS

The defeat means Spurs' winless run in the Premier League goes on. They were very much in the contest until Romero was sent off in the 30th minute.

After that, Spurs had to remain defensively compact to prevent going further behind and take their chances when they came.

Unfortunately, those chances were few and far between as United romped to a comfortable win.

The win is United's fourth in a row under Michael Carrick and TNT Sports pundit Owen Hargreaves feels he has brought the good feeling back to Old Trafford.

"You heard a couple of oles here at the end which we haven’t heard for a while at Old Trafford. The midfield three, all three were absolutely outstanding today.

"It was an even game, shaping up to be an excellent lunchtime kickoff in the Premier League but Cristian Romero just lost his head and put that tackle in on Casemiro.

"From that moment it always felt inevitable. They were really calm and scored two really good goals, must be a good feeling out there.

"That red card obviously changed the game but Bruno and Casemiro then just decided to run the game and took over."

After receiving a standing ovation from the home fans, the Englishman is stating his case for a spot in the England World Cup spot.

TNT Sports pundit Ally McCoist spoke on whether Mainoo is challenging for an England spot: "The obvious answer is yes. Whether he makes it or not I’m not sure.

"All he can do is what he’s doing."

Another fantastic win for United under Carrick who look revived and a completely new outfit under the new management.

For Spurs, they never really had a chance after Romero was sent-off at 0-0 after just 30 minutes.

A great team goal opened the scoring and then Fernandes' 'clever' finish sealed the three points.
