Burnley 0-1 Man City RECAP – Premier League latest as Erling Haaland sends City top of the league, Burnley relegated after defeat

Erling Haaland scored inside five minutes to send Manchester City top of the Premier League on goals scored as Burnley’s relegation from the top flight was confirmed in a 1-0 defeat at Turf Moor.

In a game full of permutations, Pep Guardiola’s side knew a win would put them top of the table on goals scored, while in a reversal of fortunes, Burnley knew only a win would keep survival hopes alive.

Any hopes from Scott Parker’s side were quickly diminished when none other than Haaland put his side ahead inside five minutes.

The Norwegian striker netted his 35th goal of the season when Jeremy Doku held the ball up to thread him through on goal. Out-sprinting the claret and blue shirts, Haaland made no mistake chipping his effort around Burnley's Martin Dubravka and putting City ahead.

A show of complacency followed as the title hopefuls looked a shell of themselves, and failed to put numerous opportunities to extend their lead away.

Burnley, who had only picked up 11 points at home this season, failed to cave under the pressure, but were unable to be clinical in front of goal, with Zian Flemming dragging his shot wide early on.

Nico O’Reilly attempted to catch Dubravka off-guard when he looked to squeeze his header through, with the experienced goalkeeper well aware of the danger. That would be followed by a Dubravka making a fairly standard save to push wide another O’Reilly effort.

Despite scoring the most goals this season, Pep Guardiola was left frustrated by his side’s display, as City failed to make countless chances count with Rayan Ait-Nouri and Rayan Cherki seeing efforts go begging, while Haaland failed to add to his goal tally.

The second half saw much of the same as Antoine Semenyo fired well over the bar after another Rayan Cherki effort was blocked, before Haaland smashed his second half effort against the post.

In the final moments of the game, Burnley would be given late hope after being awarded a corner in the 94th minute, just moments after a crucial intervention from Dubravka, with the Slovakia international given permission to try to become the unlikely hero.

Sitting 13 points adrift, Burnley suffered their third Premier League relegation in five seasons, and will play in the Championship next season.

Whilst Manchester City will turn their attentions to their FA Cup semi-final clash against Southampton on Saturday, before looking to grow on their advantage over Arsenal.

The City substitute hits his low drive with plenty of power, but it goes narrowly wide of the post, skittling a couple of water bottles in the process.

Perhaps an indication of City finally finding their second gear as they continue to keep winding things up in and around the final third.

This time the ball falls to Haaland and he sends his effort high over the crossbar quite spectacularly.

The hosts get forward with numbers as Flemming and Anthony combine to tee-up Foster, but he really never got a hold of it and it goes wide of the target.

The following corner sees an attempt by Rayan Cherki, but it's really not happening for him at the moment as it goes wide and lacks any real threat.

It's brilliant from Matheus Nunes to spin out of danger and move into the box, he passes to Semenyo, who finds Haaland.

The Norwegian is given two bites at it before firing it towards the right post, but he smashes against the post.

City allow Burnley to drive forward, much to Pep's discontent.

There's a growing belief from the home crowd when Burnley are able to venture into City's half but there's little end product.

It has really been a scruffy game for City despite leading by a goal to nil.
