CHELSEA BLOW THE CHANCE TO MOVE THIRD AS NEWCASTLE EARN RARE BRIDGE WIN
Anthony Gordon was on target as Newcastle United secured a 1-0 win at Chelsea to dent The Blues’ top four hopes.
The Magpies snatched the lead on 18 minutes when Joe Willock’s well-timed run from midfield saw him race clear before teeing up Gordon for a simple tap-in.
Chelsea huffed and puffed with Alejandro Garnacho and Cole Palmer both going close, while at the other end Gordon and Willock almost extended the visitors’ lead.
The hosts pushed late in the second half but substitute Liam Delap fired over and Trevoh Chalobah headed wide under pressure.
Reece James almost rescued a point in stoppage time but his thunderous long-range free kick hit the post.
The result sees Chelsea remain fifth but Liam Rosenior’s men have played a game more than their top-five rivals Liverpool, Aston Villa and Manchester United.
Newcastle rise to ninth and are now six points behind The Blues.
Next up, Chelsea host PSG in the second leg of their UEFA Champions League last 16 tie on Tuesday night. Newcastle visit Barcelona on Wednesday.

FORMER CHELSEA STRIKER CHRIS SUTTON REACTS TO NEWCASTLE'S WIN
"(An) absolutely brilliant performance from Eddie Howe and his men," said Sutton on Sky Sports.
"Defended superbly, some of the blocks they got in were absolutely outstanding.
"Aaron Ramsdale in the Newcastle goal (was) not overly worked and then they took their chance when it did come along. Good forward run from Joe Willock and unselfish to feed Anthony Gordon - and Newcastle take the three points.
"For Chelsea, it’s a big chance missed, the opportunity to go into third place. They were pummelled in Paris in midweek and this will be a sore one for Liam Rosenior.
"A tough night for Chelsea, but Newcastle really, against the odds, taking all three points."
