EVERTON BEAT BURNLEY TO MOVE WITHIN A POINT OF THE EUROPEAN SPOTS

Everton picked up their first Premier League victory at the Hill Dickinson Stadium in eight matches, beating relegation-threatened Burnley 2-0.

Goals from James Tarkowski and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall secured a second consecutive victory, which means they move within one point of a European spot and seventh-place Brentford.

Everton struggled to create any real chances throughout the first half hour, with Dewsbury-Hall’s wayward volley the closest they got to scoring.

However, it was Tarkowski’s header against his former club that put them ahead after 32 minutes, much to the delight of the Hill Dickinson Stadium.

Everton had won a free-kick for a foul on Dwight McNeil and Garner’s cross landed perfectly on the head of Tarkowski, who nodded past Martin Dubravka.

Jarrad Branthwaite came close to doubling Everton’s lead at the end of the first half, forcing Dubravka into a good save, from another Garner delivery.

Iliman Ndiaye thought he had scored the hosts’ second goal at the start of the second half, only to be denied by the offside flag.

Idrissa Gana Gueye had played Ndiaye through to score, but Gueye had waited too long to release the pass and his international team-mate had drifted offside.

Everton finally scored their second goal after an hour played, with Dewsbury-Hall scooping the ball over Dubravka.

Ndiaye slipped the former Chelsea midfielder through on goal after a brilliant team move that was started by Dwight McNeil.

Moyes’ side comfortably held off Burnley’s attempts to get back into the game and ensured they remain on the tails of the top seven with a trip to Arsenal up next.

Burnley, on the other hand, have now suffered 18 Premier League defeats this campaign and face a tricky Bournemouth side at Turf Moor next weekend.

KIERNAN DEWSBURY-HALL SPEAKS TO TNT SPORTS

On tonight's victory: "We have had to wait a while for a win here, but I thought tonight we were really good. We limited the opponent to not many chances, and it's a great reaction to back-to-back wins after two losses. It shows the character of the lads."

On European chances: "It would be massive to get into Europe. Look at the stadium, it is built for European nights and it is a massive club. It was one of the reasons I wanted to come, I believed with the new project it was possible.

"We are in a good position and it is about trying to do the business now, there is one team that gets in that spot that people did not expect at the start of the season, and hopefully it is us.

On his form: "I feel like I am getting into a good rhythm, I am more confident and I feel the best I have ever felt, fitness and football wise.

On his goal: "It was a great pass by Iliman Ndiaye, I love that run and lifted it over the goalkeeper. It's a great goal.

On England chances: "The World Cup is a big dream of mine. I know my position is stacked, but I am having a really good season, probably my best in the Premier League, I know what I can do and bring to the team.

"My main focus is getting into Europe with this club, but if I can do that, then it helps my chances internationally."

On the kick-off routine: "I think Bournemouth or Brentford did it a couple of weeks ago, and it worked quite well, so we have been doing it the last few games. As a defender, it is quite hard to face. It is probably not the first thing I would have chose to do, but I listen to the manager."

On the performance: "I thought we played really well with the ball, we kept it well, moved it well and backed up the game at St. James' Park.

On Idrissa Gueye: "I think Gana Gueye has been exceptional for us for many years. I think he is starting to get back to his best post the African Cup of Nations. Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall and Jimmy Garner have been great as well.

On European qualification:"I think it would be great if we could get into Europe, and we are really close. I look back at my time at West Ham, we were nearly relegated and the next year we got into Europe, then we were in it for three years in a row.

On where Everton are at: "I want to be positive, I want to think there is a chance of making it (into Europe), we are not talking about relegation anymore at the club, and we are trying to move on.

On home form: "I keep saying the away fans have been treated so well, but not the home fans. We recognize that and great credit to the players for keeping going. We have some big games coming up here at the Hill Dickinson Stadium."

"It has been a while (since my last goal), I don't score enough, so I am pleased with that and the win!

"Our away form has bene incredible, but we have not got enough points at home, but three points and a clean sheet tonight.

"We have let ourselves down in some games, conceding poor goals and not taking chances, but today, two goals and a clean sheet, we can be happy.

"We are within touching distance of the European spots, there are nine games to go, let's stick some wins on the board and see where we end up."
