VAN DIJK'S LATE, LATE GOAL WINS ABSORBING MERSEYSIDE DERBY
Virgil van Dijk's header in the 10th minute of stoppage-time claimed a crucial 2-1 victory for Liverpool over Everton in the first Merseyside derby at the Hill Dickinson Stadium.
Beto's opportunistic finish looked to have earned David Moyes' side a share of the spoils following a first-half opener from Mohamed Salah, but the Liverpool captain's superb header from Dominik Szoboszlai's corner claimed all three points for the visitors.
And the result ensured Liverpool secured three consecutive victories over their local rivals for the first time since April 2017, and it moved Arne Slot's team seven points clear of sixth-place Chelsea in the race for Champions League qualification.
The first flashpoint in an absorbing clash came when Iliman Ndiaye's opener was ruled out for a marginal offside, moments before Salah scored in his final Merseyside derby.
Dwight McNeil was caught out in possession, and allowed Cody Gakpo to play a brilliant ball into Salah, who applied a clinical finish past Jordan Pickford.
However, Moyes' team scored a deserved equaliser when Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall brilliantly spotted Beto inside the box, and the latter slid home past Giorgi Mamardashvili.
Mamardashvili was injured in the process and replaced by Freddie Woodman, who made his first Premier League appearance for Liverpool.
The rest of the match ebbed and flowed both ways, but after a glorious spurned opportunity by Rio Ngumoha, Van Dijk headed home to spark the away end into raptures.

CHANCES AT BOTH ENDS
A quick Liverpool move results in the ball being played to the youngster, but the sting is taken out of his shot and Pickford makes a comfortable save.
