Leeds 1-2 Tottenham result - Mathys Tel and Mohammed Kudus strike as Thomas Frank's side move second top of Premier League with Elland Road victory

Tottenham struck with two moments of quality in each half as Mohammed Kudus scored his first goal for the club to seal a battling 2-1 win against fired-up Premier League newcomers Leeds United at Elland Road.

Thomas Frank's energised side recovered from 2-0 behind to earn a last-gasp 2-2 draw at Norwegian side Bodo/Glimt in the UEFA Champions League in midweek, but made a much brighter start before an expectant home support.

After Joe Rodon had headed against the bar for Leeds early on, it was Spurs who struck first with Mathys Tel seeing a thumping drive deflect beyond home goalkeeper Karl Darlow on 23 minutes.

Daniel Farke's men, who remain 12th in the table on eight points, drew level on 34 minutes when Noah Okafor tapped home from close range after Spurs goalkeeper Guglielmo Vicario failed to hold a powerful effort by Brenden Aaronson.

But Tottenham completed a third straight victory at Elland Road for the first time in these meetings when Kudus cut in from out wide before piercing the net with another deflected finish that left Darlow helpless.

Amid the driving wind and rain, Vicario was called into action in the death throes of a memorable battle as he dived to claw out a volley by substitute Joel Piroe, as Spurs held out to move second top of the table above Bournemouth on goal difference with 14 points, a point behind champions Liverpool.

The frantic win ends Leeds' long 23-match unbeaten run in the league at home, a record stretching back to September 2024 when they lost 1-0 to Burnley in the Championship. But they will take plenty of heart from their performance as they gave Spurs a serious test.

Tottenham host Aston Villa in their return to action after the international break on Sunday, October 19, while Leeds visit Burnley a day earlier.

"I've definitely been waiting it," he told TNT Sports. "As an attacker, it boosts your confidence when you score.

"I want to give my team-mate [Mathys Tel] some credit. I am a big fan of how he trains and how he has kept on going.

"We now go to represent our country and come back with the same focus.

"This is a big step in the right direction."

"Of all the things that Tottenham did well today, they fought really, really hard for the win, and were up for the battle," said the former Spurs and England goalkeeper on TNT Sports.

"Leeds gave a great account of themselves but two moments of magic, and they take three points back down the road."

And Spurs have completed a very fine victory. A deserved three points in the end via the excellent finish of the outstanding Mohammed Kudus early in the second half, his first goal for the club. Tottenham move second top of the table with this triumph.

Managed to get that on target with little or no backlift, but Vicario was quick react in clawing it behind before Pascal Struijk sees a header deflect over. Spurs hanging on for dear life, but they managedto survive a series of croess.

James Justin has come on for Jayden Bogle for the home side, while Brennan Johnson replaces Mohammed Kudus for Spurs.

"Spurs are just trying to take as much sting out of this atmosphere, they're just trying to manage the game."

Not sure if an object was aimed towards HIM, but he picks it up before hammering a corner well over the box and out the other side. A rush of blood to the head, perhaps.

Bogle tries to stick the ball onto the head of Harrison at the back post, but too much on the delivery as the cross drifts out of play for a Spurs goalkick. Groans are palpable.

No need to chase this game any more as Frank opts to shuffle his pack for these closing moments at Elland Road. Wilson Odobert waves to the away fans as he makes way for Kevin Danso.

Not quite throwing the kitchen skin at it, but not far off it here. Joël Piroe replaces Noah Okafor and Lukas Nmecha is on for Gabriel Gudmundsson

An equaliser now would raise the roof off Elland Road, but required quality is elusive as Jayden Bogle arrows a shot harmlessly high and wide of the Leeds goal.

Game management now as important as the game. "Spurs usually manage games well when they've got their noses in front," says Lucy Ward on TNT Sports. "But Leeds will try and pile everything they've got into the rest of this game. They will keep pushing and probing."

Probably the right time to freshen matters up for Spurs as Richarlison and Pape Matar Sarr arrive on the scene to replace Mathys Tel and Xavi Simons. Spurs are a whole lot more difficult to break down at the back than last season in the Premier League. No doubt about that.

Surely going to be a few added minutes to the 90 after the treatment required for Porro. Spurs not yet home and dry in wet and windy Leeds as Longstaff drills a long-range strike a yard wide of goal with Vicario on the dive to his right. Fine effort.
