Liverpool maintained their perfect start to the season, after holding on for a 2-1 victory over Everton in the Merseyside derby.

Ryan Gravenberch and Hugo Ekitike gave the Reds a two-goal lead in the first half, and it eventually proved enough despite Idrissa Gueye halving the deficit just before the hour mark.

Gravenberch lifted the roof off at Anfield in the 10th minute when he made a deep run from midfield to latch onto Mohamed Salah's clipped ball, before neatly guiding a volley beyond Jordan Pickford and into the far corner.

Salah curled just over soon after, Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall fired wide at the other end before the Reds doubled their advantage on 29 minutes.

Gravenberch turned provider on this occasion, sliding a neat throughball in behind the Everton defence for Ekitike to sweep home.

The visitors responded well after the break and got themselves back in the derby in the 58th minute, when Iliman Ndiaye cushioned Jack Grealish's deep cross into the path of Gueye, who swept a fierce first-time effort into the top corner.

David Moyes' side continued to push in search of the equaliser, but with the rest of the league still to play, leaders Liverpool held out to establish a six-point buffer at the summit.

The Reds arrived in the Merseyside derby off the back of five straight wins in all competitions to start the season.
