Manchester United 1-1 West Ham United result - Soungoutou Magassa denies Ruben Amorim’s Man Utd with late equaliser at Old Trafford

Manchester United and West Ham United shared the points at Old Trafford on Thursday evening in a 1-1 draw to round off the Premier League mid-week fixtures.

Ruben Amorim’s side could have gone up to fifth with a win, and they dominated possession and territory for much of the evening, without creating too many clear-cut opportunities.

It was the home side who took the lead in an improved second half when Diogo Dalot controlled a deflected Casemiro shot in the box and turned the ball home for only his fourth goal for the club and his first at Old Trafford.

But West Ham, for whom Jarrod Bowen worked tirelessly once again, equalised late on when Player of the Match Soungoutou Magassa slotted home after Bowen’s header had been cleared off the line.

The performance and result will be frustrating for the home side, but the point offers encouragement to Nuno Espirito Santo’s visitors, who have enjoyed an upturn in form since the Portuguese coach took charge.

League leaders Arsenal overcame Brentford last night to restore their advantage at the top of the table, and the Gunners will be live on TNT Sports this Saturday in the lunchtime Premier League kick-off.

Ruben Amorim’s side would have climbed up to fifth with a win tonight, but for all of their possession and territory, they didn’t create all that much and failed to finish West Ham off when they had the chance. This performance won’t do anything to change any of the opinions of the supporters – it was decent enough, but is that sufficient for Manchester United? That depends on your standpoint, I guess.

Manchester United were the better side for much of the evening against a West Ham team who played almost exclusively on the counter-attack, but the visitors had an extra edge thanks to the impressive Soungoutou Magassa in midfield. The French youngster joined from Monaco earlier this year, and showed real quality throughout, playing with good energy and impressive quality in the centre of the park, before popping up with the decisive equaliser. He’s one to watch on this evidence.

The final whistle goes and the points are shared in a match that became extremely lively in the final half hour.

The game opens up as West Ham pour forward and Man Utd hit them on the break. A long ball forward his headed up by Todibo inside the box, and it falls to Bruno Fernandes, who attempts to volley it home on the turn but fails to hit the target.

A cross into the box is poorly dealt with by the West Ham keeper and it drops to Bruno Fernandes, who looks to shoot but is brilliantly denied by the goalscorer Magassa. He’s a player, keep an eye on the French youngster.

This game has exploded into life, and West Ham hope to snatch it as they bring on Kilman for Wilson, who had begun to fade.

The former Man Utd man slides into a challenge on Dorgu late and is very, very lucky to escape a second yellow.

Man Utd counter and Fernandes finds Mbeumo with a lovely pass. He stands Todibo up and looks to dart inside, going down as the defender hangs out a leg. But there was no contact at the referee correctly awards a corner and nothing more.

Bowen darts on to a threaded pass down the right and cuts it back for Potts, whose shot is blocked by Casemiro. Man Utd deal well with the set-piece.

The goalscorer is withdrawn, with Dorgu replacing him at wing-back for the remainder of the game. He gets a standing ovation from the home fans.
