West Ham 3-1 Sunderland result - Hammers boost Premier League survival hopes as Crysencio Summerville, Jarrod Bowen and Mateus Fernandes seal victory

West Ham boosted their Premier League survival prospects with a glorious 3-1 win over a ragged Sunderland at the London Stadium.

Nuno Espírito Santo's side remain in 18th spot in the table, but are only two points behind Nottingham Forest in 17th - who visit Brentford on Sunday - after enjoying a first-half goal blitz against the Black Cats.

Crysencio Summerville got the ball rolling when he nodded Jarrod Bowen's cross into the net on 14 minutes before Bowen expertly converted a penalty on 28 minutes after Ollie Scarles was tripped up by Trai Hume.

In what was arguably their best performance of the season so far, Mateus Fernandes added the third on 43 minutes when he smashed an effort high into the net from 25 yards on 43 minutes.

The visitors, without injured captain Granit Xhaka, had no response to the energy of the home side, who reversed their 3-0 defeat at the Stadium of Light on the opening day of the campaign.

They did improve to net a consolation goal via Brian Brobbey's header on 66 minutes after some fine supply work by Nordi Mukiele, but only the crossbar denied the home side a fourth with Fernandes again showing his qualities from distance.

Régis Le Bris side's remain in ninth spot after a forgettable day, but are only three points behind Liverpool in fourth from 23 games.

"It's a massive victory for West Ham as having beaten their rivals Spurs, they wanted to continue this run," he said on TNT Sports.

"They needed to back it up at home as there had been a bit of unrest around the place. There's a bit more relief, and there's a bit more pressure on Nottingham Forest now."

Karen Carney told TNT Sports: "The first half of last week was superb, and that gave them the momentum to win it.

"We said they needed to start early, and that's what they did again.

"The only disappointment is they didn't get the clean sheet, which would have been only their second of the season, but fair play to them."

West Ham forward Crysencio Summerville told TNT Sports: "There's nothing better than winning. We're in a good flow. We took the positives from last week, and you could feel it, you could smell it.

"The most important thing was scoring the second having taken the lead. It was a good job from everybody. We have to keep going to lift our position. I surprised myself as this was my first header."

Matheus Fernandes told TNT Sports: "It was first goal outside the box.

"I'm happy for the team that we played like this. I just about shooting.

"I was a little bit lucky, but we're happy with the win."

Max Kilman is on for Summerville, who is given a huge ovation from the home fans. Wilson Isidor picks up a booking too.

Fernandes cracks a shot against the bar with Roefs beaten before Soucek is penalised for a late challenge on the Sunderland goalkeeper on the rebound.

Granit Xhaka is involved in a few "discussions" with the West Ham supporters. Words being exchanged between the Hammers and the former Arsenal midfielder, who is missing today due to an ankle injury.

Alphonse Areola forced to nudge the ball onto the post and bar after an errant cross from Luke O'Nien almost flies straight into net. Not sure he meant that, but it would have counted.

Luke O'Nien replaces Nordi Mukiele, who is none too happy about being taken off. "Toys out of the pram stuff," said Ally McCoist on TNT Sports.

But Wilson Isidor can't keep a volley down at the back post as he ends up ballooning the ball well over the bar.

A late and tired challenge in trying to track the run of Summerville as he bounded up the park at pace. 3-1 in the closing 10 minutes.

"You don't want to sit deep and invite Sunderland onto you," said Ally McCoist on TNT Sports. "That's the last thing you want to do if you're West Ham."

Wilson Isidor replaces Eliezer Mayenda for the visitors with Castellanos replaced by Freddie Potts for the Hammers.

All got a bit nervy around the London Stadium with West Ham being asked to defend for the first time really this afternoon. Keeping the back door shut has been an issue all season for home side.

This time Valentín Castellanos has been booked for some foul play against Dan Ballard.

Callum Wilson replaces Pablo for the home side with Scarles departing to be replaced by El Hadji Malick Diouf.
