Cody Gakpo hopes the winning run that Liverpool extended with a 5-2 victory over West Ham United will be "the start of something beautiful".

A difficult season has so far failed to deliver on the pitch despite spending a reported £446 million, the most lavish transfer window in Premier League history.

However, Arne Slot’s side are still in contention for the UEFA Champions League and Emirates FA Cup and Saturday's win took them level with fourth-placed Manchester United in the Premier League.

After the convincing win over West Ham, Alexis Mac Allister told BBC Match of the Day that Liverpool’s players now "understand each other", and goalscorer Gakpo said The Reds’ four-game winning run can inspire confidence for their trophy tilts in the last months of the season.

"It was a good afternoon. Step by step, we are getting a better team. We had a difficult moment during the season, but hopefully these last few games are the start of something beautiful," Gakpo told Sky Sports.

"We worked very hard, even in the first half. We scored from two set pieces or maybe three. The score was 5-2, but the game was much closer than the end result. They are a good side.

"We are coming to the end of the season, and we are still in the Champions League and FA Cup. There is a lot to play for. Hopefully, we can keep the momentum we have and end the season in a good way.

"When the game is stuck, and you know you can score from a set piece, we lacked that earlier in the season. It is good."

Liverpool do not play another side in the top half of the Premier League until mid-April.

They end the season with games against Manchester United, Chelsea, Aston Villa and Brentford, who are all fighting for European qualification, but their next two matches are both against Wolves before they travel to Galatasaray for a UEFA Champions League rematch in the round of 16, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Gakpo started as the Turkish side stunned Liverpool 1-0 courtesy of a Victor Osimhen penalty, but the winger insisted it will be a different story in the knockouts: "We are up for a fight. We have been there already this season, and we know what we are up against."

Though Gakpo scored against West Ham, the undoubted star of the show was Hugo Ekitike who scored and provided two assists for The Reds.

He has been one of the few bright sparks so far this season for Liverpool as Florian Wirtz, another summer arrival, has been unable to consistently replicate his outrageous Bundesliga form in England and is out injured alongside record signing Alexander Isak who has scored just twice for his new club.

However, Mac Allister believes his side are starting to gel and reach their full potential.

"Now that we spend some time together, things are easier for us, we understand each other," he said. "The last four or five months is when teams show what they can do. That is what we want."
