Aston Villa v West Ham United result - Graham Potter suffers debut defeat as Morgan Rogers completes comeback victory

Late goals from Amadou Onana and Morgan Rogers subjected Graham Potter to a 2-1 defeat in his maiden match in charge of West Ham United against Aston Villa.

The result sees the former Chelsea manager's side crash out of the FA Cup at the first hurdle, despite dominating the opening hour at Villa Park.

Lucas Paqueta got Potter's spell up and running in perfect style just nine minutes in, firing home with aplomb after being teed up by Crysencio Summerville from the right flank.

The Brazil midfielder looked to have a new lease of life in the opening exchanges, while the Hammers showcased a newfound resilience with the hosts unable to muster a shot on target during the first 45 minutes.

But Unai Emery's side came to life 19 minutes from time, as a dubiously awarded corner resulted with Onana tapping home amid a scrappy goalmouth scramble to level the tie.

And Rogers sealed Villa's passage into the fourth round hat as he swept home a Watkins cross after a blistering move five minutes later, as the woodwork denied Youri Tielemans' subsequent strike to make for a nervy finish.

With the lack of video assistance, there has been some talk over the corner which was awarded to Aston Villa which Onana eventually scored from - but Rogers could not recall the event when asked about it post-match.

He told ITV: "I don't really remember it, I don't know! But I'm glad it was a corner because we scored from it, but yeah I don't really remember - just happy it went in."

The result puts Villa in the pot for the fourth round of the FA Cup, and the former Middlesbrough winger said there is not reason that his side cannot go all the way in the competition.

"Why can't we win it? That's how we look at it, but we take it game by game," Rogers said.

"Anything can happen in the cup competition, you don't know who you're drawn against, you don't know where you're going to play.

"Just take it game by game and try to win. But yeah just take it game by game and try to win.

"But we want to go on a run, we're in the competition to win it, it's the most historic competiton in England, we all know how much it means and we'll do our best to win it."

The match winner was drawn on the quite contrasting performances of Villa in the first and second half of tonight's cup victory.

"A bit of belief, a bit more patient," he told ITV "Maybe a bit more forward-thinking, I think we had a lot of the ball in the first half, probably not risky enough trying to go forward and make that difficult pass.

"In the second we did, I know we didn't always do it right, but we created more chances, more mayhem in that attacking third and that's where our goals came from.

"We don't want to concede early like we have been but at the same time, it shows we have a good belief in the changing room that we know we can come back against anyone.

"We will look to rectify the start of games but we're happy with how we end them."

The Hammers have been way too easy to carve open so far this season, and for a large chunk of tonight's clash at Villa Park, they seemed to have found a new kind of resilience.

But their second half display showed Potter just how much work there is to be done. It was a real capitulation in the final 20 minutes, and Villa strayed forward at will, when for much of the tie they had struggled to even test Fabianski in the Hammers goal.

The former Brighton boss will be keen to amend West Ham's soft underbelly immediately, but face a tough upcoming run in the Premier League with clashes against Fulham, Villa, Chelsea and Arsenal all soon to come.

That was breathless in the last 20 minutes. True cup tie energy, a fantastic comeback from Emery's side.

Potter will be really disappointed with the way his side let that one go.

West Ham throwing everything at this and when Kudus wins the ball in his own half, he finds Aaron Cresswell who has advanced into loads of space on the left.

Kosta Nedeljkovic gets enough on it to send it behind for a corner, and from a scrappy knockdown, Danny Ings is presented with what will likely be the Hammers' last chance.

But he spurns well over.

And West Ham are finally beginning to pile forward.

They have a promising opening with Wan-Bissaka in acres of space on the right, but when he is found, his touch is way too heavy, allowing the hosts to clear.

It seemed for a moment as if Potter had suddenly found the antidote for West Ham's pretty torrid defence this season.

But Hammers fans were quickly dealt a dose of reality with a capitulation 20 minutes from time - Villa able to slice West Ham open at will.

The former Chelsea boss certainly has work to do.

Potter is throwing the dice with a double substitution, but Villa are really taking this to the visitors now and are pushing for a third.

Chalk and cheese from the first half, hard to believe the hosts could barely get a sniff at goal.

An absolutely storming strike from Tielemans comes crashing off the woodwork. My word, what a goal that would have been.

What's in the Villa Park air? The hosts look a side possessed.

My oh my, how a game can change in a few minutes. Villa have absolutely flipped this on its head.

Emi Buendia gets it out to Watkins who races past Mavropanos, before teeing up Rogers who simply guides the ball into the back of the net, and Emery's side are now the ones primed for a place in the fourth round.

They could barely string an effort towards Fabianski's goal all night, but in the last five minutes they've been imperious.

An eye opening 10 minutes or so for Potter - after his side looked in such control.

The hosts are level! And that was a really scrappy one, but they will not mind one bit.

The corner doesn't look as though it should ever have been given, but West Ham are found out as Mings keeps it alive before Maatsen causes chaos with a low strike.

Soucek gets a foot on it, but cannot stop Onana from tapping home from just yards out to pull this tie back into contention.

It's anyone's game!

And it's a real zinger from Maatsen as he unleashes a fierce strike from outside the box. The West Ham stopper is equal to it.

Villa continue to push but with that, continue to fail to find the target.

The ball sits up nicely for Bailey to flash an effort towards goal, but it is blocked - falling to the Belgian midfielder who lets fly from the edge of the box.

It takes a fairly obvious nick off the heel of Soucek before rolling wide - but Tim Robinson signals for a goal kick, much to Tielemans' disgust.

Though Fabianski has yet to be troubled, Villa are trying to mount the pressure with a couple of quickfire corners.

Amid their forays, the hosts claim for a penalty as the ball hits a West Ham hand - but it is rightfully waved away.

The wide man is penalised as he cynically brings Wan-Bissaka down and West Ham have a chance to lump players forward.

Scarles' delivery is deep and Kilman brings down Cash trying to get up for it - a free-kick awarded in the other direction.

Bailey has been the pick of the bunch for a struggling Villa so far this evening, and he does fantastically well outside to turn and drive inside, picking out Rogers on the edge of the box.

The former Middlesbrough man, though, is leaning back and spurns his effort well over the bar.

Potter's immediate trust in the 19-year-old seems to be paying dividends, a fantastic first half from the youngster.

Vladimir Coufal enters the fray straight away in the second half, with Summerville making way.

The substitute will assume the right-back role, with Aaron Wan-Bissaka advancing in front of him.

The winger was a positive influence in that first half, but seemed to go down awkwardly holding his hamstring shortly before the break.
