SEMENYO FIRES CITY TO FA CUP VICTORY WITH STUNNING WINNER
Antoine Semenyo scored a brilliant winner in the 145th FA Cup final as Manchester City edged Chelsea 1-0 at Wembley to give Pep Guardiola a remarkable 20th major trophy in 10 years as City manager.
With the showpiece occasion finely poised at 0-0 on 72 minutes, Semenyo, a £65 million signing from Bournemouth in January, worked a delightful piece of magic to produce a backheel finish from an Erling Haaland pass to secure a merited eighth Emirates FA Cup victory for the Etihad club.
Having also lifted the Carabao Cup with a 2-0 win over Arsenal in March, it keeps alive City's prospects of a historic Treble.
But they will need Arsenal, two points clear of them in the Premier League title chase, to drop points in their final two matches at home against Burnley and away to Crystal Palace, while finishing themselves with maximum points against Bournemouth and at home to Aston Villa.
While City won the FA Cup after back-to-back final defeats to Manchester United (2-1) and Palace (1-0), Chelsea were left to reflect upon a fourth straight FA Cup final defeat.
After a first half of little quality, Chelsea, with interim coach Calum McFarlane overseeing matters, enjoyed a brighter spell early in the second half, but their best chance probably came seconds after Semenyo's opener when Enzo Fernandez hooked the ball inches over the bar.
There is news of Xabi Alonso being appointed Chelsea's new manager after the sacking of Liam Rosenior, but there is clearly work to be done by whoever comes in as their new permanent manager with the Blues slumping to ninth in the Premier League table and toiling for European qualification.

STEVEN GERRARD REACTS TO NEWS OF ALONSO'S CHELSEA APPOINTMENT
Gerrard told TNT Sports:"It smacks of trying to take the attention away from a defeat. The problem with it is if they don't now deliver Xabi Alonso in the next two or three days, then the fans are going to get wound up even more.
"All of the players in that Chelsea squad will be wanting to play Champions League football next season. You want to be playing against the best. Xabi will walk in and he will get their eyes and the attention of the whole dressing room.
"He's a coach, he's thorough, he's a great guy as well and I think they'll want to play for him.
"He's a big name who has done ever so well so far. I don't think you can judge him for the last few weeks at Real Madrid.
"You need to look at the bigger picture where he's gone to Bayer Leverkusen and he's knocked Bayern Munich off the perch as a young coach.
"But, he's got top experience around any level of football as a player, cup finals, Champions Leagues, World Cup, the Euros. So I think he is the perfect name for Chelsea. Whether Xabi would like to jump into that, we'll have to wait and see in the coming days."
On Liverpool missing out: "The noises from Arne Slot, and there aren't any noises coming from above him, is that he's going to start next season as Liverpool manager.
"I'm sure Xabi's people would have spoken to Liverpool and asked what the situation is [with Slot]. If the noise is that they are going to stick with Arne Slot, then Chelsea might be his next option."

"I mean disappointing obviously, to lose," he told TNT Sports. "Not much in the game. It was pretty even. They had one half chance, and they managed to take it.
"No one is happy when you lose. We have lost a fair few games recently, it has been difficult.
"Every time we step out onto the pitch the target is to win.
"I think the key thing is stability.
"Last week we went to Anfield and probably should have won, then we lose here today. It is difficult. There is a lot we need to learn and to take forward."

HERE IS WHAT PEP HAS BEEN TELLING TNT SPORTS AFTER HISTORIC VICTORY
Pep Guardiola told TNT Sports: "Yeah, five finals in 10 years. We won three, lost two. It's quite decent, I would say. Enzo Maresca created a pattern with two titles."
I have to ask you about the goal because that was one of the best goals we've seen in the FA Cup for a long time for many years.
Guardiola: "Yeah, you're right. Normally, Antoine has to cross and he makes the finish for Erling. But yeah, the impact of Marc [Guehi] and Antoine in the winter transfer window has been incredible.
"Our back four was amazing. The only regret in this final are the amount of players that deserve to play, who don't play. Always have the feeling that even now, after many, many years, always it's difficult to swallow, but it's a business.
"You have to do what you believe."
Can I ask, what did you say at half-time? Obviously [Omar] Marmoush come off and [Rayan] Cherki came on, but what was the message to the team?
Guardiola: "We thought that [Moises] Caicedo jumped a lot to Rodri, the space was behind, so we tried to find in that position for Cherki.
"But sometimes tactical work is perfect, but you don't find that space, but we found the goal.
"The trip yesterday was a mess to come here. We spent six hours to arrive, for a delay for the trains and whatever. So I expect that they're so good. So the quality they have is there. Really good.
"The pockets are with Enzo Fernandez and Cole [Palmer] is dangerous, and second half they were better.
"Even we have the first chance with Antoine, they were better and we found the goal, but football sometimes is like this. I had the feeling that last season, for example, against Crystal Palace, even the previous season against United, we were better than today.
"But in football, sometimes it happens. Of course, we are really pleased and happy for the guys, to make us alive in the Premier League. Hopefully we can now end the season.
"They were not consistent there, but on game, you know, finals, everything can happen. And obviously now, we know how important is Tuesday night.
"We'll go immediately back to Manchester now. We celebrate next Monday, with the parade with the women's team that won the league.
"We celebrate the two trophies and we see if we can extend the hope until last game at home against Aston Villa."

ALLY MCCOIST ON CHELSEA'S 'TERRIBLE' END TO CAMPAIGN
"It's been a terrible end to the season for Chelsea," he said on TNT Sports.
"Six defeats in a row in the Premier League [before drawing last weekend at Liverpool]. One goal in that run, before they were slightly better at Liverpool, but I didn't think they had been brilliant in their semi-final [against Leeds] and they were just OK today.
"I don't think they did enough to win the game. I wouldn't let three average performances gloss over what has been a really poor end to the season."

John Stones told TNT Sports: "It's so special. I didn't really want to do that but they dragged me into it [lift the trophy]. The game wasn't a final in many ways, but we controlled the game and stopped them from creating chances. To have three FA Cups to my name is very special.
"I don't think it will set in yet as I'm trying not to get too emotional about what's happening in a week's time, as I want to focus on the game in midweek.
"I've felt the love off everyone so it's been overwhelming. I'll definitely miss it."
On City looking unplayable: "We've found a system that works for us, with new players coming in and adapting to a new system, it's now clicked.
"The manager hasn't rotated as much as he has done in previous seasons and the continuity has helped us to work on things."
On the half-time message from Pep: "[Pep Guardiola] was angry to be fair. I've never seen him as angry as that. He was passionate and he just wanted to us go out and show the fight and hunger to go out and win a final.
"He speaks a lot about how we sometimes play against ourselves and we were flat in that first half.
"He wanted to see a willingness to run and press to put them on the back foot. He thought our high press was a little bit off."
