BOULBINA THE HERO AS ALGERIA BOOK QUARTER-FINAL SPOT IN EXTRA TIME
Adil Boulbina’s sensational extra-time strike earned Algeria a narrow 1-0 victory in the last 16 of the Africa Cup of Nations, as the two-time winners squeezed past a resilient DR Congo.
There was a lack of flow to a first half that yielded few chances, although Luca Zidane, son of France legend Zinedine, did pull off a smart save from Cedric Bakambu’s low strike.
From the resulting corner, Axel Tuanzebe headed wide, while it took until the 42nd minute for The Greens to register their first shot, which saw Ibrahim Maza drive forward and fire wide from outside the area.
The second half was just as cagey as the first, with Zidane not tested again until the closing stages when he got across to keep out Joris Kayembe’s drive from distance.
At the other end, Anis Hadj-Moussa - twice - and Mohamed Amoura saw shots saved as Algeria tried to turn up the heat, but ultimately extra time was required to separate the two sides.
The 2019 champions were the better of the two in the additional 30 minutes, but keeper Lionel M'Pasi was consistently in their way, making a stunning save from Fares Chaibi, getting down low to his right to palm away an effort that was arrowing into the bottom corner.
The goalkeeper could do nothing to keep out Boulbina’s winner in the 119th minute though, a stunning strike that rocketed into the top corner from outside the area, after the substitute had received a delicious Ramiz Zerrouki pass.
That goal will make the 22-year-old a national hero, as it tees up a quarter-final clash with Nigeria.

GOAL! ALGERIA 1-0 DR CONGO (ADIL BOULBINA)
Oh. My. Goodness! What a way to break the deadlock! That is an outrageous strike!
It's Boulbina the substitute who gets it, helped by a stunning Zerrouki pass inside the full-back.
Boulbina breaks onto it and cuts inside on his right foot before unleashing a rocket of a shot that spears into the far top corner.
Outrageous. Minutes left. Seconds even. Deadlock broken!

MBUKU STRIKE SAVED
There is one move from DR Congo though, with Mbuku breaking down the right and cutting inside. His left-footed strike is deflected and Zidane makes a very easy save. Perhaps a pass might have been better than the shot.

TIME TICKING AWAY
This game might well be fizzling out now. Neither side will want to give anything away at this late stage, not with penalties looming and a quarter-final place at stake.

MPASI SPILL NEARLY CAUSES CHAOS
Another left-wing cross is whipped into the area. Mpasi just about does enough to get there on the second attempt after spilling the initial effort.
The goalkeeper took a bit of whack when that happened too, so he's down receiving treatment. Thankfully, he's now up and okay.
