Senegal 1-0 Morocco (AET) LIVE - Sadio Mane’s side win incredible Africa Cup of Nations final after farcical scenes with Brahim Diaz's penalty miss

Senegal won an enthralling, controversial and hugely chaotic Africa Cup of Nations final 1-0 after extra time against hosts Morocco, as Pape Gueye’s thunderbolt proved the difference after Brahim Diaz’s gutting penalty miss at the end of normal time.

Farcical scenes in injury time saw a Senegal goal divisively chalked off for a minimal push on Achraf Hakimi before Diaz won a penalty after several minutes of complaining about being flung to the ground by El Hadji Malick Diouf.

Referee Jean-Jacques Ngambo Ndala had already been struggling to control the contest, and after he awarded the penalty via VAR Senegal manager Pape Thiaw pulled his players off the pitch and into the dressing room in protest against the pair of refereeing decisions, causing a 15-minute delay in proceedings until they reluctantly returned to the field.

But after more delays, in the 25th minute of stoppage time, tournament top scorer Diaz stepped up to take the penalty, then chipped a pitiful Panenka into the arms of Edouard Mendy. Diaz was inconsolable after a moment that writes the Spanish-born 26-year-old into AFCON folklore for all the wrong reasons, and a gaffe that he will struggle to live down as long as he plays.

Mendy had done a clever job of delaying the kick, in a game where he’d previously been outshone by opposite number Yassine Bounou. The Moroccan goalkeeper had produced a string of fine saves including from Gueye and Iliman Ndiaye, but was powerless to Gueye’s fizzing shot into the top corner.

Earlier, standout midfielder Abde Ezzalzouli had given Nayerf Aguerd a golden opportunity with a pinpoint cross that the defender couldn’t turn goalwards, while Ayoub El Kaabi missed a pair of chances that could’ve won the day.

Indeed, it had already been an incident-packed second half as Neil El Aynaoui’s accidental head clash caused a seven-minute stoppage while both players were patched up.

But Gueye’s goal proved to be the difference as Morocco struggled to recover in extra time from the most gut-wrenching double-setback and Cherif Ndiaye had the best chance in the remaining time as Bounou made another incredible double-save to keep his side in it.

And after Diaz’s penalty was Morocco’s first shot on target in the game, Senegal managed extra-time superbly to clinch their second AFCON title in four years, in what could be Sadio Mane’s last game in the tournament.

We have the familiar scenes of the contrasting tears of the losing side and delirious celebrations of the winners. But three hours after kick-off the Moroccon players look extra dejected given everything that happened.

Cameras linger on Hakimi, predictably, while Diaz is nowhere to be seen.

But after winning their first title four years ago, Sadio Mane and Senegal are champions of Africa once again!!!

It's ironic that such a chaotic game ended with a whimper, Morocco barely had the ball in the opposition half in the last five minutes of the game and this is one of the most gut-wrenching losses in the history of international football.

Morocco have 180 seconds in the rain to rescue the AFCON final.

The Morocco players look out on their feet, even Hakimi and Ezzalzouli are struggling with accuracy right now. But someone in a white shirt needs to find something very soon.

Say what you want about the penalty scenes (it's probably justified) but Senegal have managed extra time fantastically.

They're keeping the ball away from Mendy's goal, Thiaw's side barely committed anyone forward for that set-piece, but it still fell for Idriss Gana Gueye who rifled a shot against the face of goal that had Bounou worried.

The 26-year-old has been everywhere in this final and wins a corner for his side with a fizzing, swerving shot from outside the penalty area that Bounou could only punch behind.

He's under pressure but manages to collide with Targhalline before falling, so wins a valuable free kick.

That should've been GAME OVER! Mbaye puts fellow substitute Cherif Ndiaye through, Bounou stops his initial shot but it squirts out from under the keeper and into the path of the striker.

He attempts to hit it first time but incredibly, Bounou gets his fingertips to the ball at full stretch a the shot flies wide!

However, if Ndiaye took another touch he would've had an open goal.

It's another huge chance for Morocco, this time from a corner! Aguerd missed a golden headed chance earlier but got almost perfect contact on that one, slamming his effort into the bar, with Senegal defending the resulting melee desperately.

Pape Thiaw has made his last change too, Malick Diouf is off for Ismail Jacobs.

There's clips circulating of the fanzone in Rabat where confetti went off as Diaz took the penalty, assuming it'd be the moment Morocco clinched AFCON on home soil.

Instead, we're into the second period of extra time and Morocco have to find a goal.

There could be only 15 minutes left in one of the most remarkable football matches in history. Both sides had chance to score before the break, Bounou saved Mbaye's crack shot before Hakimi gets to the byline but can't find his teammate with the cross.

Ezzalzouli still looks like Morocco's best player after about two hours of match time, he surges up the right then pings a low cross to En-Nesyri, who can't quite turn his header on target.

If he did, it would almost certainly be 1-1.

Another stoppage, this time for Igamane and Mendy who are both on the truf in Senegal's penalty area.

That gives the TV director something to do, and the cameras catch a red-eyed Diaz who's covered the rest of his face with a mask after being substituted.

Igamane has had an immediate impact, lining up on the right he fizzes a cross in that's headed clear, then Morocco swing another ball in for Ezzalzouli that Mendy gets to first, then doubles up in pain claiming the midfielder caught him.

This is just a hunch, but he'll probably be ok.

Morocco look shell-shocked but must recover their composure. Diaz fashions a shooting chance on the edge of the box but spoons his attempt straight into Medny's gloves, that will be his last intervention in the game (but not his most memorable.

Ilias Akhomach is on in his place while Mazraoui has been replaced in a very attacking change, for Hamza Igamane.

As if this couldn't get any more chaotic, Senegal now lead!!! It's a stunning break by The Lions of Teranga started by Mane who draws in the Morocco midfield before backheeling the ball into space, and Idrissa Gana Gueye finds Pape Gueye in full flight to continue the attack.

Morocco are scrambling so can't close him down, and he takes full advantage - unleashing a thunderbolt past Bounou into the top corner!
