Crystal Palace 1 Fredrikstad 0 - Mateta's goal sees Eagles open UEFA Conference League with victory in first leg against Norwegian outfit

Jean-Philippe Mateta’s strike ensured Crystal Palace’s debut European night and first game without Eberechi Eze ended in victory.

Palace dominated throughout but, against a Norwegian side who possessed in effort what they lacked in quality, the home side could not make the scoreline reflect their dominance.

They were often wasteful, especially with shots from the edge of the area with 11 of their 17 shots off target, but were unfortunate a deflected effort from Mateta came back off the post in the first half and a late back-post header from Daniel Munoz suffered a similar fate.

The goal did come nine minutes after the break with Mateta, who looked especially dangerous all match, heading Will Hughes’ errant shot wide of goalkeeper Martin Borshelm.

So Palace will travel to the plastic pitch of Fredrikstad next week with an advantage, but the tie far from settled.

They certainly have not put Fredrikstad out of the tie, but most importantly they secured victory.

Skogwold was played in down the left flank and his shot was a yard or so past the far post - though Henderson probably had it covered.

But he heads wide of the goal. He will feel he should have at least hit the target.

It looked like the substitute's effort may have found its way into the corner, but it deflected wide off Eid.

But he over hits the pass. They are looking quite tired now Palace. They have put a lot into the match without great reward.

Their last substitute sees Leonard Owusu replaced by Shein.

Munoz fired the ball across the area towards the substitute but he couldn't get the ball under control.

For the second time the Eagles hit the post. This time Lerma's cross is met at the far post by Munoz whose effort beats Borshelm but flicks the outside of the woodwork.

Salomon Owusu and Ohlenschlaeger are withdrawn, Kvile and Bjartalld come on.

He really can fling it a good 40 yards but taking too long to dry the ball with a towel sees him get a booking.

Hughes' free kick deflected towards the Palace skipper but Woledzi must managed to get in the way and prevent a shot at goal.

He was delivered the ball from the by-line by Mateta, but his effort is a yard or so over the angle of bar and post.

For a moment it seemed like the visitors would be through on goal but Lerma made a crucial sliding clearance.

Hummelvoll-Nunez and Skogvold come on for Holten and Sorlokk.

He had to make the foul. Sarr played the ball into the big striker who turned the Norwegian centre back and was set to give the ball back to his on-running team-mate.

And he diverts it towards goal which has Borshelm scrambling across his line, before realising it was just heading wide.

Sosa's cross is deflected behind the by-line despite the keeper's best attempts.

Mateta heads home Hughes' goalbound effort. Sosa's throw-in came out to the veteran and, after his first effort was blocked, his second effort was diverted wide of the goalkeeper to put Palace in front.

Guehi's cross found him, inexplicably, unmarked on the six-yard box but he headed high over the bar.
