UEFA Nations League: Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson score as Wales beat Montenegro, Italy claim successive wins

Wales picked up their first win under new boss Craig Bellamy as Harry Wilson scored a stunning long-range goal in a 2-1 UEFA Nations League win over Montenegro on Monday. Italy made it two wins from two with a 2-1 victory over Israel, while it was bad news for Arsenal as Martin Odegaard limped off in Norway's victory. Elsewhere, France bounced back from defeat to overcome Belgium 2-0.

Early goals from Kieffer Moore and Harry Wilson earned Wales a 2-1 win and their first UEFA Nations League victory of the 2024/25 campaign on Monday.

Wales failed to find the target in Craig Bellamy’s first game in charge – a goalless draw against 10-man Turkey on Friday – but found themselves 2-0 up inside three minutes in Montenegro.

And they took just 37 seconds to break the deadlock at the Gradski Stadium in Niksic.

Moore capitalised on a scrappy exchange on the edge of the Montenegro box, catching the ball cleanly as he steered a first-time strike into the bottom right corner.

Wilson doubled the visitors' lead seconds after referee Georgi Kabakov blew his whistle to restart play.

The Fulham midfielder picked up the ball 25 yards from goal, took a touch to get the ball out of his feet and struck a stunner into the top right corner.

Montenegro pushed to pull a goal back and Wales were sent a warning when Vladimir Jovovic beat Karl Darlow from 20 yards out before his shot crashed off the inside of the post and away from danger.

But minutes later, the home side managed to halve the deficit when Nikola Krstovic squared the ball across the six-yard box for Driton Camaj to tap into an empty net and set up an intriguing finale.

But Wales held out for the three points, which puts them in second place in Group B4, level with leaders Turkey on four points.

Italy beat Israel for back-to-back wins

After sealing a brilliant result against France in Paris on Friday, Luciano Spalletti’s side continued their fine form to make it two wins from two.

Davide Frattesi scored a bizarre goal for his second strike in as many games, while former Everton striker Moise Kean also found the back of the net in a 2-1 win.

Inter Milan’s Frattesi gave Italy the lead shortly before half-time when he steered the ball past the goalkeeper with his chest, from club teammate Federico Dimarco’s pinpoint delivery.

Kean doubled the Italian's lead on the hour mark, smashing the ball home from close range after Giacomo Raspadori had a shot well saved.

Israel pulled a goal back in the 90th minute when Mohammad Abu Fani slammed a half-volley past Gianluigi Donnarumma, but Italy stayed firm in the remaining minutes to collect maximum points.

Odegaard injury worry

Arsenal’s Martin Odegaard was forced off with an ankle injury in the 67th minute of Norway's victory over Austria, just six days before The Gunners make the short trip to Tottenham Hotspur for the North London derby.

Odegaard looked to roll his ankle on the turf and seemed in genuine discomfort before Erling Haaland watched on as his international teammate limped off aided by two Norway physios.

But despite losing their captain, Norway managed to seal a 2-1 victory thanks to Haaland’s 80th-minute strike.

Elsewhere, France bounced back from their defeat to Italy, as Randal Kolo Muani and Ousmane Dembele scored in a 2-0 win over Belgium.
