Scotland 0-3 Greece Result - Steve Clarke's side humbled at home as they suffer Nations League relegation

Scotland have been relegated to the second tier of the UEFA Nations League after being thumped 3-0 by Greece in the second leg of their play-off tie at Hampden Park. 

Steve Clarke’s side held a 1-0 lead following the first leg in Piraeus on Thursday but their advantage was eradicated after 20 minutes when Giannis Konstantelias slotted home into the bottom corner from 10 yards out.

The visitors took the lead on aggregate as Konstantelias turned provider just before the interval, picking out 17-year-old Konstantinos Karetsas who curled a sublime first-time finish into the far corner. 

The hosts were grateful for the half-time whistle but it was just 14 seconds into the second period when Greece scored their third as Konstantelias intercepted a Ryan Christie pass and played in Christos Tzolis, who coolly slotted home from close range. 

Scott McTominay, who scored the only goal of the game in the first leg, troubled Konstantinos Tzolakis in Greece’s goal early on, but Scotland failed to create anything of note after going behind as Hampden Park grew frustrated, with boos ringing around the stadium at several points throughout the tie.

The visitors were inches away from adding a fourth as Vangelis Pavlidis dinked past Craig Gordon from close range but John Souttar was on hand to make an acrobatic goal-line clearance.

The defeat saw Scotland relegated to League B of the Nations League after finishing third in their League A group.

Greece, meanwhile, earned promotion to League A after finishing second, behind England on goal difference, in their League B group. 

Scotland’s next engagements come in the form of two friendlies in June before they begin World Cup qualification in September, where they will come up against Greece once again. 

Scotland midfielder John McGinn, speaking to BBC Scotland, said: "We started pretty well, had a couple of chances, we just let ourselves down with the first goal we conceded. We've got to reflect now before two friendlies in the summer.

"It's an embarrassing night for us, everyone is flat in the stadium, we let ourselves down.

"No threat in behind, probably too easy to pick up. Greece deserved to win. That will maybe give us a kick up the backside for the World Cup qualifiers - we know they are no mugs.

"Tonight shows we need to be much better if we want to get to the World Cup."

Scotland were relegated to League B of the Nations League with a 3-1 aggregate defeat against Greece, who were promoted to League A of the competition.

Steve Clarke's side finished in third in their League A group, ahead of Poland in fourth, but will now play in the second tier of the competition.

As for Greece, they would have been disappointed to have not earned automatic promotion after finishing behind England on goal difference in their League B group, but they will now join Thomas Tuchel's men in the top tier.

The sides will meet again in World Cup qualification, which starts for them in September, but up first for Scotland is a pair of friendlies against Iceland and Liechtenstein in June.

Greece, meanwhile, have a couple of friendlies against Slovakia and Bulgaria over the summer before starting their bid for next year's World Cup.

Gordon plays a really sloppy pass looking for Tierney that is cut out by Masouras but the winger's chip from 30 yards out sails over the goal.

Down the other end and McGinn picks out Tierney with a lovely chipped ball into the box but his guided volley is saved well by Tzolakis.

It's too little too late though as the referee blows the full-time whistle, which is met by resounding boos around Hampden Park.

A back pass followed by a long ball in quick succession are both greeted by boos. It's been a really poor display from Scotland in front of their fans this evening.

There will be four minutes added on here.

A couple more changes now for the visitors as Pavlidis and Mouzakitis are withdrawn as Galanopoulous and Ioannidis come on for the closing stages.

Greece want a fourth here but Masouras' shot is blocked and it's recycled back to the keeper. There are no signs of a Scottish comeback in these closing stages.

McTominay's pass is really loose and allows Pavlidis to run at the back four but the striker fails to capitalise as he is dispossessed on the edge of the box.

It's Wilson who gives it away next with a sloppy pass in midfield but Tzolis blazes over after being fed into the left of the box. Let-off for the youngster.

Scotland earn a corner down their left but McGinn's outswinging ball into the box is flicked clear before Conway's effort is blocked.

The ball drops back at McGinn's feet and he can swing another cross into the area but Hirst's header loops high and wide with the striker off balance.

The referee goes back to book Hirst for an earlier foul as he joins fellow substitute Ferguson in the book.

A couple of changes for Greece now as Konstantelias and Karetsas make way for Pelkas and Masouras. Scotland will be delighted to see the back of those two.

Changes too for the hosts as well now as Wilson comes on for his debut in place of Robertson while Christie makes way for Conway of Middlesbrough.

Pavlidis is given the yellow for not allowing McGinn to take a free-kick. He looks baffled by the decision, which is baffling in itself. As blatant as they come.

Souttar looks for Tierney over the top from the free-kick but it has far too much weight on it and flies out for a goal-kick. More boos from Hampden.

Scotland string together a more promising move but it ends with a tame Hirst header from a Robertson cross being comfortably collected by Tzolakis. It was going wide anyway.

Down the other end and Souttar keeps his side in it! Robertson is caused all sorts of problems by Karetsas and Konstantelias before the latter prods a ball through towards Pavlidis.

Hanley is shrugged out the way by the striker, who dinks an effort over Gordon from a tight angle but Souttar is retreating to make a crucial goal-line clearance.

Karetsas is clothes-lined by Ferguson and he goes into the book, not long after coming on. It was a pretty nasty one from the Scottish midfielder with his forearm catching the face of the youngster, who looks to be in some discomfort.

It's starting to look quite comfortable for the visitors now as they knock the ball around Scotland with relative ease.

The changes look to make an immediate impact as Hirst is fed into the left of the box and he looks to pick out Ferguson arriving with pace into the area but he can't quite get the ball under control. It was better though from Scotland.

McTominay then works the room for the shot from the edge of the box but it takes a defection which takes the pace off of it and it's easy for Tzolakis in goal for Greece.

Gilmour is nudged to the ground and should be awarded the foul but play is waved on as the ball drops to the feet of Mouzakitis. Fortunately for the hosts, the midfielder's effort from the edge of the box dribbles wide.

The changes for Scotland are here now and it's Gilmour, Adams and McLean to make way with Tierney, Hirst and Ferguson on in their place. The home fans are certainly not happy to see Gilmour withdrawn.

Scotland win a corner down their right but the ball into the box is pretty poor and they fail to capitalise on another promising position.

It looks as if Clarke is getting ready to make a triple-substitution. He has seen enough.

Christie drives the ball 30 or 40 yards up the pitch and wins the throw-in in Greece's half and that gets this Scottish crowd going slightly but they give it away almost instantly.

The visitors then break with pace down the other end and Karetsas is picked out in the right of the box in acres. He takes his time to set himself before looking to curl another one into the far corner but this one drifts wide. The home fans respond to this latest Greek attack with loud boos.

Hampden Park has fallen completely flat following that goal, as Greece score their third goal with their third shot on target of the evening. Clarke must be absolutely livid.

Greece come forward once again but this time Gordon can claim Giannoulis' ball into the box from the left.

It's a disaster for Scotland... Just 14 seconds into the second half and Greece have their third.

Christie's square pass is cut out by Konstantelias, who drives to the edge of the box before sliding Tzolis into the left of the area with a sublime reverse pass.

The weight of the ball allows the winger to take aim first time and he tucks home into the bottom right corner.

We are back underway at Hampden Park with Greece kicking things off, going from left to right. There are no changes from either side at the break.

Can Scotland get themselves level in the tie? A reminder it will go to extra-time and penalties if needed this evening.
