St Polten v Chelsea result - Sam Kerr scores twice as Blues run riot in UEFA Women's Champions League

Sam Kerr and Catarina Macario both scored twice as Chelsea ran riot in Austria, putting six past St Polten to maintain their unbeaten start to the season and move up to second in the UEFA Women's Champions League table ahead of Wednesday's fixtures.

Kerr, who was making her first start for the Blues since 2023, returned with a bang on a night that saw the visitors dominate from start to finish, racking up 43 attempts on goal.

However, the scoreline proved to be a little harsh on the hosts' goalkeeper, Carina Schluter, who produced a string of impressive saves throughout.

Wieke Kaptein gave Chelsea the lead inside the opening quarter of an hour before Macario doubled their advantage just before half-time.

Macario extended the visitors' advantage from the penalty spot eight minutes after the restart, before Kerr, who had missed several good chances earlier on, finally found the net in the 75th minute.

A shot from substitute Lauren James, making her first appearance since the UEFA European Championship final in the summer, deflected off Lisa Ebert to make it five before Kerr added the proverbial icing in stoppage time.

For Sonia Bompastor's side, who also had two goals disallowed for offside, it felt like a job well done as they now look ahead to Liverpool in the WSL on Sunday.

Meanwhile, St Polten's hunt for a point - and indeed a goal - in this year's Champions League goes on. They remain rooted to the foot of the table after three matches.

In the two other matches being played this evening, Caroline Weir scored a 98th-minute equaliser as Real Madrid rescued a point in a draw 1-1 with Paris FC.

Meanwhile, Lyon beat Wolfsburg 3-1 to move top of the Champions League table.

The scoreline was perhaps a little cruel on St Polten goalkeeper, Carina Schluter, who produced a string of fine saves. But, in the end, the visitors found their clinical edge.

If Kerr finding the net was a welcome sight for Chelsea fans, they are in for more of a treat as Lauren James enters the field for the first time since the European Championship final.

The England international replaces Kaptein, who opened the scoring this evening.

The two substitutes combine! Charles feeds Nusken on the left-hand side of the St Polten area.

The German has almost too much time to make up her mind and from a tight angle blasts the ball at Schluter's legs.

It just won't happen for Kerr at the moment. She lashes a fierce effort that flies narrowly over.

Both managers turn to the bench. Potter, Charles and Nusken are all on for Chelsea, replacing Walsh, Rytting Kaneryd and Thompson.

For the hosts, Krizaj and Ollivier come off for Rukavina and Woelki.

Chelsea thought they had a fourth after Thompson smashed the ball into the roof of the net from point-blank range, but the effort is ruled out.

Macario gets her second of the night. She tucks away the spot-kick after Thompson was brought down in the box by Krizaj.

Schluter pulls off a great save to deny Macario a brace! The ball comes back to the Chelsea number nine in the box and she hits it on the half-volley, but the St Polten stopper is equal to it.
