Newcastle 45-42 Sale result - Hosts make comeback from 25 points down at break to seal dramatic win

Alex Hearle’s hat-trick led Newcastle to produce the biggest comeback in club history to reel in Sale and give their long-suffering fans a thrilling end to their last home match of the Gallagher PREM season.

In the final 60 seconds, Cammy Hutchison burst out of his own 22 and fed Hearle on the halfway line for him to run the rest of the way.

The match looked over at the break with Sale leading by 25 points after running in tries from Tom Roebuck, Seb Kelly, Tom O’Flaherty, Joe Carpenter and Alfie Longstaff, with Thomas Christie and Amanaki Lelei Mafi scoring for the hosts.

Freddie Lockwood and Hearle scored tries for the hosts after the break, sandwiching one from Aaron Reed, and crucially substitute fly half Ben Healy was perfect with his conversion kicking (four from four).

Even when Hearle scored with eight minutes remaining a win looked unlikely with the ball stuck under their goalposts - until the dramatic ending to the game.

The win is the second of the season for Newcastle, who will finish bottom of the PREM, while Sale - in seventh - can be caught on the last day by Gloucester and Harlequins below them.

If anything gives a good feeling for Newcastle with their best-ever comeback in the last home game of the season.

The try is a seven-pointer.

What a fantastic end to the game and the home season for the Red Bulls. A brilliant burst from deep in his own 22 from Hutchison and then he fed Hearle on the halfway line and touched down under the posts.

They will nede to travel the lenght of the field to get the try they need.

Newcastle at least giving their fans a chance of victory in their last home game.

The forwards get stopped by the line and then Healy releases Hearle to touch down to the right of the posts.

He kicks straight into touch and Newcastle can now kick into the corner.

A fantastic flicked pass from Healy wide to Christie who dove in, in the corner.

After a period of concerted pressure, O'Flaherty passed outside to Reed who went in and touched down to put the game beyond doubt.

They took out Sale players as they approached the line and even the referee when he ran in front of them. Roebuck was held up and Carpenter fumbled running over the line.

Another chance for Sale to attack from a line out.

Roebuck's run initially got Sale close into the opposition 22 and then after O'Flaherty could not collect his own kick forward, the stand-in centre ran in to touch down. But the TMO ruled O'Flaherty just touched forward.

A fine kick from the substitute stand off curling in from the right flank.

A fine long kick from Connon gave Wade a chance to win the chase for the ball and he set the ball up in the ruck for Lockwood to pile over in the corner.

The ball is being kicked between the two 22s at the moment.
