Scotland 50-40 France result - Gregor Townsend's side complete record win to keep Six Nations title hopes alive by crushing French Grand Slam dream

Magnificent Scotland racked up seven brilliant tries to bury France's Six Nations Grand Slam dream with a record 50-40 win over Les Bleus at a euphoric Murrayfield.

Gregor Townsend's men will head to Dublin to face Ireland on Saturday in the hunt for a first Six Nations title, having last won the championship when it was the Five Nations back in 1999.

And they will do so on the back of a famous triumph against a humbled French side, who could not handle the pace and power of an inspired home team, who beat the 36 points they managed against the visitors in 1999 when Townsend scored a try in a 36-22 win in Paris.

France had led 14-12 early on via tries from Louis Bielle-Biarrey (18') and Theo Attissogbe (22') after Darcy Graham had given Scotland a 7-0 lead on five minutes with Kyle Steyn responding (26') to keep the home side in touch.

But it was Townsend's men who took the game away from the defending champions with a breathtaking period of play that saw the French rendered powerless as further superb scores from Pierre Schoeman (32'), Ben White (44'), Steyn (51'), Graham (59') and Tom Jordan (63') saw Scotland unbelievably race 47-14 ahead.

Yellow cards for Matthieu Jalibert (32') and Lenni Nouchi (59') summed up the sense of ill discipline overshadowing a swamped French side as their Grand Slam bid was brutally crushed before an estimated 15,000 travelling fans.

Late tries by Antoine Dupont (66'), Thomas Ramos (74', 81') and Oscar Jegou (79') earned a bonus point with the final outcome probably flattered the visiting side, whose late rally gave the scoreline a gloss despite being outplayed for large swathes of a one-sided joust.

Scotland are level on points with France ahead on points difference before the final round of matches on Saturday, which will see Scotland visit Dublin to face Ireland before France host England in Paris later in the evening.

"It’s definitely up there considering how this tournament started for us. We believe now, the tournament’s not over for us, I could not be prouder to be captain of this team," said Scotland captain Sione Tuipulotu on the BBC.

"I remember doing this interview after the Italy game and it sounded very different. The changing room believes in each other and believes in its coaching staff and we’ve got an opportunity next week.

"We stuck together when times were tough after that first round and a tough autumn."

Winger Kyle Steyn confirmed he will be fit to face Ireland after suffering a gash on his leg.

"I think we knew you couldn’t come and try contain them [France}, you had to fire shots at them," he said.

"You just knew it was going to be a great day. It was all about making sure we fired the first shot.

"I was more worried about how much we were celebrating, we needed to get our feet on the ground and keep going."

Josh Bayliss is yellow carded as France break clear for another try via Ramos. And over goes the penalty from Ramos. It will end 50-40 in favour of Scotland. A remarkable occasion, but Scotland run out 50-40 winners. Phew! Astonishing!

A rapid attacking break by France is put away by Oscar Jegou before Ramos adds the two extra points. So slick from the French.

And they have a penalty advantage! Russell this time opts for the penalty. And Scotland suddenly have the 50 points as the ball drifts through the posts. 50-26 now for Scotland. Never been done before. What a day for the home side!

A brilliant attacking move by the visitors as Ramos manages to dive for the line and score for bonus-point try. Seven tries to four now. Ramos misses the penalty.

France chipping the grubber kick through via Jalibert but Graham pounces on the loose ball. Russell clears, but France have a penalty advantage. And will kick to the corner.

Louis Bille-Biarrey looking to work his creative magic, but ends up knocking the ball into touch, but the power play of France earns them a scrum inside the Scotland half.

Up against 14 men, but France are throwing the ball about with ease and throwing caution to the wind. Having nothing to lose after being blown away in this second half. Looking to get the big men involved.

France are just not coping with this Scotland attack. And they are done for offside this time. Scotland prefer to kick for the corner rather than the posts. Which tells you the self-belief surging through the home fans. Magnificent from Scotland!
