Doherty nails double to seal first frame in battle of legends against White

Ken Doherty showed his enduring class with a 4-1 win over fellow Crucible icon Jimmy White in the first round of the Saudi Arabia Masters in Jeddah.

The 1997 world champion always looked the likelier winner against six-time world finalist White, who toiled for consistency on Friday night despite being presented with plenty of chances to score.

In the first meeting of the evergreen duo in a ranking event in 15 years, the Irishman produced breaks of 96 and 64 to end the challenge of White, who edged out Doherty 5-3 in their first meeting in the quarter-finals of the Mercantile Credit Classic in 1991.

Doherty's reward for overcoming White is a match with Latvian teenager Artemijs Zizins in the second round on Saturday night.

Meanwhile, 12-time women's world champion Reanne Evans battled to a 4-2 win over Kreishh Gurbaxani in the first round.

"First up on the match table can be daunting, we were both edgy at the start, then I found a bit of rhythm and fell over the line," said Evans, who will face Liam Davies in the second round on Saturday afternoon.

"I am trying to relax more this season, just trying to play rather than trying to win.

"There are good and bad days but I've had three good ones so far.

"It's great to experience new places and I have won, so I'm enjoying it! Hopefully I can play better in the next round."

"The cloth was lovely. Very reactive. I settled in okay," said Doherty on TNT Sports. "I was cueing okay around the pink and black. Just the long shots I have to work on. We've had some great battles over the years. He's still a legend. 118 years between us. It is great we are still playing. To be playing on the TV table is a bonus. I'll keep smiling and keep trying and see what happens."

White with a brilliant piece of cueing to knock in red to right middle off side rail. But he is not on final red. Goes for broke and slams in red along top cushion. Safety to follow from Jimmy after a timely 28. Back to 20 points behind. And Ken can't escape from a snooker. Hits yellow the second time.

Plenty of points with Jimmy to play for. Could be a huge steal for White. That he never envisaged.

Jimmy with a thick safety shot. A big error, but Ken then misses red to right centre on brink of victory. 64 is not the winning thrust. White back at table. Incredible miss by Doherty.

This should be like shelling peas for the 1997 world champion. Where does it go wrong from here? Difficult to see him not getting over the line at this visit.

Doherty has always looked the likelier scorer in this match, and he has another big chance here. Into the lead in frame, the frame he needs to seal victory. Reds are all open. As are pink and black. Golden chance to kill off the match.

Jimmy requiring the next three frames to avoid tumbling out here. Which is far from beyond him. Could be a re-rack on the go in the fifth frame of the evening. But that is quickly averted with white returning to the baulk end.

This has been very impressive from Ken. In complete control of the white ball. Excellent from the Irishman. In goes frame-ball red. That should be that. Jimmy has seen enough of frame. Ken within one now of victory.

Chance for Ken to steady the ship after the stop-start nature of the third frame. Superb blue to the yellow pocket to continue visit to table. Doing his work here with reds and pinks. Break moves to 44 in no time at all. Chance to get frame won for a 3-1 lead.

White will look to roll in a few points at this visit. Still looks very comfortable at close range. But he then misses thin pink before going in off. Ken butchers a long red trying to go in off pink. Chance back with Jimmy, but he can't pot pink over a top pocket.

Ken goes for a long red, but can't get the right potting angle. Jimmy then with a lovely red down the length of the table to the yellow pocket to hold for the black. Super from Jimbo.

A few scoring visits needed by the Irishman, but sinks a lovely double on a red in finalising his lead. Jimmy gives the nod. Ken into a 1-0 lead.

Double kiss on a red by Jimmy trying to release a red from side rail, and he hands Ken chance to get first frame done and dusted.

Frame not yet a done deal as Doherty misses tough red along baulk cushion. Will Jimmy get chance to launch the counter punch?

Blunder by Jimmy going for a long-range red. Sticks up an easy starter for the Irishman, who will look to get frame won here and now for a 1-0 lead.

Jimmy forced to sit back and wonder how much that error will cost him. And the answer is only 37 as Ken misses red with rest when he look poised to do some serious damage.

Jimmy 'Whirlwind' White and Ken Doherty are set to compete in a battle of the ages in the first round of the Saudi Arabia Masters in Jeddah next month. The £2,302,000 ranking event is the richest in snooker beyond the World Championship with a first prize of £500,000, the same sum that Zhao Xintong earned with his Crucible victory in May. White and Doherty first met in a ranking event in 1991.

Kreishh potting green, brown and blue, but decides to refuse the pink with rest. Attempts a snooker, but fails to get white behind black. And on we go on pink and black.

But Gurbaxani misses a black off the spot. That is a brutal miss. How costly will that prove to be? In goes the yellow, but no position on green. Just safety to follow.

This looks very promising here for Reanne to establish a 3-0 lead. Only three reds left on deck. Nothing overly daunting left. But she misses red to right centre. What a golden chance has gone there.

Well, that is such a disappointing end to the latest visit to the table by Kreishh, who compiles 31, but then misses black. Reanne coming back to the table, but she is out of position on only 24. Story of the match so far really. But a terrific plant on reds is picked out to continue this break.

This third frame is obviously a biggie for Gurbaxani, who is trying to improve upon a high break of only 32. A nice long red by Kreishh early doors in third frame.

Superb winning black by Reanne to seal the deal in the second frame. That was a corking pot. 37-minute frame, but it falls to Evans, who leads 2-0 in race to four.

Fair to say, this match looks wide open with neither player overly convincing. Evans almost sticks up black to left middle, but it runs on just enough in the nick of time.

Reanne suddenly into the lead after Kreishh flukes brown, but sees white disappear down left centre. Has been a seismic turnaround in this frame as Evans then pokes home blue, but sees pink stick up over top jaw. Kreishh cans pink and slots a superb black along top cush to force the re-spotted black.

Well, this is incredibly tense as Gurbaxani twice misses the brown. Warned he could forfeit the frame for a third straight miss, but crashes straight into the object ball. Over 11 minutes on the brown. So far.

Reanne hauling four points back from a snooker after Kreishh misses the brown with his swerve shot. Over seven minutes being spent on the brown. Nothing coming easy out there at moment.

All very taut in this opening match in Jeddah heading for final four colours. Reanne needs them all. Kreishh requires brown and blue.

This second frame being played in fits and starts as Reanne misses pink to left middle. What a chance that was. Onto the colours.

Into the lead in the frame then as break reaches 31 with pink downed. Cue ball control not really with it as a mid-range pink fails to drop. That is frustrating.

Great log red by Kreishh. Caught that as sweet as candy. And nicely on yellow to follow. Chance then to get some points on the board here.

Reanne first to the punch in the second frame of a possible seven in this match. Would dearly love to weigh in here with a hefty total. But misses a straight blue to right middle. Which is not ideal.

A lovely little snooker by Gurbaxani, but good hit off one cushion across table to hit blue. Gurbaxani then flukes blue that he didn't want. Evans finalises the frame by holing long pot on pink seconds later. A nice start for Reanne.

Lovely long green by Evans to close in on first frame. World No. 91 Kreishh will need a snooker here otherwise it is a 1-0 lead for the TNT Sports pundit.

Off we go then after a nice introduction to Jeddah with some dancers showing their skills before the snooker players get their respective cue arms working. Early error by Reanne in the safety department, and Gurbaxani produces a fine snooker after slotting a red early on.

Looks a nice one to get the action up and running in the chase for the £500,000 first prize. 144 players will be whittled down to one a week tomorrow when the champion is crowned.

The second staging of the world's richest ranking event beyond the World Championship is worth £500,000 to the winner, a cheque which world No. 1 Judd Trump scooped last year with a dramatic 10-9 win over Mark Williams in the final frame. Leading 62-0, the Welshman was almost over the line, but a clinical 72 clearance from Trump saw him snatch the title and seven-figure first prize on the final black.
