ATP Finals 2024: Daniil Medvedev hits back with win over Alex de Minaur to keep hopes alive - 'Block the noise'

Daniil Medvedev is up and running in the Ilie Nastase Group at the ATP Finals after beating Alex de Minaur in straight sets. Medvedev improved to 7-3 against De Minaur as he claimed victory in one hour and 19 minutes. The result moves Medvedev level with Taylor Fritz and Jannik Sinner on one win. Fritz and Sinner play each other in the group later on Tuesday.

Daniil Medvedev got his first victory at the ATP Finals as he swept past winless Alex de Minaur in the Ilie Nastase Group.

Medvedev won 6-2 6-4 to move to one win, alongside Jannik Sinner and Taylor Fritz, who face each other later in the day.

ATP Finals debutant De Minaur now only has a very slim chance of progressing ahead of his last group match against Fritz.

Medvedev's performance was a significant improvement on his "angry and frustrated" showing in his opening defeat to Fritz, and he celebrated by sticking his fingers in his ears and then writing "block the noise" on a camera.

Asked to explain the meaning of the message, he said: "I think a lot of football players do it. Maybe Memphis Depay was the first.

"If I understand it right, it’s about social media and stuff. After my performance against Taylor and some of my comments, I went into this match blocking the noise even from myself.

"No tantrums, just block the noise, I didn’t care what was happening on the court, just tried to play and it was a good feeling.

"It’s just good to do it sometimes for yourself. The more popular you become the more fans you get, the more haters you get, the more attention, sometimes even the good noise can make you off balance.

"You win everything and you are a god, and then you lose two matches in a row and everyone is like 'your career is finished'. Sometimes it’s good to just block it and I did it well today."

De Minaur had won the most recent meeting against Medvedev at the French Open, but on Medvedev’s favoured hard courts it was a far more difficult test for the Australian.

De Minaur was under pressure immediately, saving a break point in the first game of the match and then dropping serve in the third game to fall 2-1 behind.

Medvedev held to move 3-1 ahead despite two double faults and was then handed another break when De Minaur double faulted.

Medvedev looked in the groove with his groundstrokes and closed out the first set in 41 minutes.

The second set was tighter with five love holds in the opening eight games and no looks at break points for either player.

But with the business end of the set approaching, it was De Minaur who blinked first.

From 30-15 on his serve, De Minaur lost three points in a row as Medvedev broke with a brilliant backhand winner.

Medvedev had no trouble closing the win out as he served his way to victory.
