Daniil Medvedev has always been one to wear his heart on his sleeve and that was no different in Monte Carlo as he suffered arguably the worst defeat of his career on Wednesday.
The world No.10 was defeated 6-0 6-0 by Matteo Berrettini, ranked 80 places below him, in the last 32 clash at the Monte Carlo Masters.
But, while Berrettini received deserved plaudits for his almost faultless tennis in Monaco, it was Medvedev’s rage that captured the headlines.
The 30-year-old smashed his racket no fewer than seven times as he suffered his first ever ‘double bagel’ defeat.
Medvedev has never hidden his dislike of playing on clay, once calling it "a surface for losers".
His tantrum occurred early in the first set, falling 2-0 down when Berrettini took advantage of Medvedev’s inability to capitalise on having break points in the opening game.
He smashed his racket on the floor, before throwing it and then smashing it a further five times.
From then on, it was one-sided, with the first set wrapped up inside 25 minutes and the second taking just a minute less.
Berrettini, the former world No. 6, did not speak on the outrage showed by his opponent, but spoke of how great he felt on the way to his first top win over a top 10 player since defeating Alex de Minaur in the same location a year ago.
"I think it was one of the best performances of my life," Berrettini said.
"I think I missed three shots in the entire match and it is not easy against a tricky player like Daniil, the game plan was perfect and my weapons were working.
"I faced two break points in the first game and then after that it felt I was playing better than him.

”I was not expecting to win zero, zero like that but I kept my focus as I know one break or two breaks is not enough sometimes, so I kept pushing."
"I have been playing for a long time, so I felt it was really important to hold my serve at the start of the second set.
"It is a matter of a few points at the start and then when you go up two breaks you are more relaxed and the ball is [flying] out of your racquet."
Medvedev’s tantrums have become associated with his style of play and on this occasion it took centre stage and former doubles world No.1 Jamie Muray believes he will be "pretty embarrassed" by the whole debacle.

”It is shocking, it shouldn't happen... it did," Murray said on Sky Sports.
”I am not sure how much effect that will have on him going forward. I think he will be pretty embarrassed walking into the locker room and will probably be wanting to get off site pretty quickly.
”He played so well in Indian Wells as well. He talks about clay not being his favourite surface and the difficulties he has on it but he won in Rome [in 2023] - if you can win in Rome, you can play on clay.”
