Australian Open 2025: Nick Kyrgios unsure on future after doubles retirement - 'Weighing up my options'

Nick Kyrgios has sparked further speculation about the future of his tennis career having said he is "weighing up his options" after he and Thanasi Kokkinakis retired injured from their doubles opener at the Australian Open. The pair were both suffering with niggles obtained from their singles defeats, and they handed a walkover to compatriot duo Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth.

Nick Kyrgios has fuelled further discussion about the future of his tennis career having said he is "weighing up his options" following his retirement from the doubles at the Australian Open.

Kyrgios and his partner Thanasi Kokkinakis, the 2022 men's doubles champions at Melbourne Park, offered their hands in defeat to compatriot opponents Aleksandar Vukic and James Duckworth on John Cain Arena.

Both Kyrgios and Kokkinakis are struggling with injuries obtained from their singles defeats.

Kyrgios had been dealing with an abdominal strain that he sustained in Brisbane ahead of the year's first Grand Slam, while Kokkinakis was in some discomfort during his five-set defeat to Jack Draper on Wednesday.

That led to the pair hitting serves at half pace for much of their opening doubles match, but when they found themselves a set and a break down in the second set, they made their way over to the other side of the net to concede defeat.

Kyrgios played through the pain barrier in his first singles match against Briton Jacob Fearnley, and while he battled bravely, he was defeated in straight sets by the Scot.

Afterwards, the Australian hinted that he had played his last singles match at Melbourne Park.

Asked at his post-doubles press conference whether he could return to the Australian Open to play doubles again, he replied: "Potentially".

Kyrgios, who has just returned to the tour after a two-year injury hiatus, had envisioned that he would only be able to play one more year's worth of top-tier singles.

"I couldn't see myself playing more than probably this year high-level singles anymore," he admitted.

"The maintenance - four, five hours on the treatment table every day - to not even have the guarantee to be healthy to play a week of tennis. I think I'm weighing up my options.

"Doubles is a bit easier on the body. I think we can still play amazing doubles. I think you saw, we broke. I served three times in the set, and we lost the set, which is probably the first time it's ever happened in our careers. I think I broke someone three times and lost the tennis match."

Kyrgios did not rule out continuing to play doubles alongside Kokkinakis again, but insisted that the pair have "no plan".

"We have no plan," he said.

"I think we just have that connection on the court and the chemistry. We know each other's games. Grew up together. We just have a good feel for the game of doubles together. I think we play very similar. We like to do the same things. It felt like we hadn't stopped playing doubles.

"Literally from the first game, we broke to love. I was, like, this just feels like a continuation of where we were that time we won it.

"I'm sure we'll play together at some stage. But I can't guarantee that I'll be back here."
