Naomi Osaka reaches the Wimbledon quarter-finals for the first time after upsetting World No.1 Aryna Sabalenka on Centre Court

Naomi Osaka booked a spot in her maiden Wimbledon quarter-final with an outstanding straight-sets victory over world number one Aryna Sabalenka.

The 14th seed had lost her three previous encounters with the Belarusian in 2026 but pulled off the upset courtesy of a 6-2 7-6 triumph in a battle of the four-time Grand Slam champions on Centre Court.

"It was a really fun match! Even if I lost, I would have thought it was a fun match," said Osaka in her post-match on-court interview.

"I'm just really grateful. For me, this court is so special, and this is the first match I've won on this court. Thank you guys so much. I really appreciate it with the atmosphere."

Osaka broke twice as she produced some scintillating tennis before serving out a 32-minute opener with aplomb.

A shell-shocked Sabalenka took a lengthy break off court and returned with renewed vigour in the second, fending off two break points in the fifth game of a set that was ultimately serve-dominated.

Osaka would have been well aware of the top seed’s imperious record in tie-breaks, but she made a mockery of it as she surged through it by a 7-2 scoreline to triumph in one hour and 28 minutes.

The Japanese star will now meet 10th seed Karolina Muchova in the last eight.

Osaka is the third Japanese Women’s Singles quarter-finalist in Wimbledon in the Open Era after Kimiko Date (1995 and 1996) and Ai Sugiyama (2004).

Osaka is the first player to defeat Sabalenka in straight sets in a Major since Azarenka (US Open 2020) - only Navratilova (143) played more consecutive Women's Singles GS matches than Sabalenka (121) with one set won in the Open Era.

Sabalenka lost her first Grand Slam tie break since the French Open 2023 (vs Karolina Muchova) interrupting the longest winning streak in tie breaks in the Open Era, males included (21 in a row).

Osaka rampages through the breaker by a 7-2 scoreline to book her spot in her first ever Wimbledon quarter-final.

It was fully deserved too, with eight aces and 21 winners helping her to finally defeat the Belarusian at the fourth time of asking in 2026.

Sabalenka is having way more joy with the first serve now and a fourth ace helps her through a game for the loss of one point to guarantee her the minimum of a place in a breaker.

Osaka almost takes the racquet out of Aryna’s hand with a rocket first serve and then catches the Belarusian cold with a loopy second delivery down the T.

Sabalenka gets into the rally at 30-15 but balloons a poor forehand long and Naomi throws down another powerhouse serve to tie the set at five apiece.

Osaka’s level has been so good that she looks genuinely surprised and puzzled when she misses.

The Japanese fizzes a backhand long at 15-0 and there’s no way back from there as Aryna brings the heat on serve and polishes off the love hold with a one-two forehand punch.

Osaka zaps down a pair of aces to move on to six for the evening as she darts level with a solid hold to 15.

Osaka puts her hand to her heart and closes her eyes in dismay as she swats a simple overhead into the net after Sabalenka had clawed back up rasping pass off a dropper.

It gives the Belarusian breathing space at 40-15 and a thumping first serve seals the deal to allow her to apply the squeeze on the board.

Osaka has all the answers as she romps through a love hold to level at three apiece heading into the business end of this second stanza.

The world number one is made to hang around at deuce and coughs up a break point when Naomi jumps on a short ball and arrows away a lovely backhand winner.

This time she can’t find the first serve but a lovely kicker tees up a backhand in-behind to keep her afloat.

Osaka fluffs her lines with a rushed mid-court backhand into the net and a clutch serve helps the top seed scramble through a dogged hold.

Osaka has handled everything Sabalenka has thrown at her so far and has also remained steely-focused, despite the Belarusian’s long period off court between sets.

The Japanese shrugs off a near miss at 40-15 and hammers a timely first serve down the T to level at two apiece.

Sabalenka bashes her racquet against her head in irritation after another misfire on the forehand allows Osaka to probe at 0-30.

Sabalenka booms down her third ace of the contest to earn game point and ducks out of danger with a big, wide serve.

Osaka surges level in the blink of an eye as a fourth ace helps her through a dominant love hold.

That was a long, long time off court from Sabalenka, which was perhaps odd given the first set lasted only a smidgen over half an hour.

The Belarusian is fortunate when a miscued forehand lands in and pulls clear to post a hold to 15 after Osaka sizzled a backhand up the line a whisker wide.

Osaka does not blink as she serves out a 32-minute opener to 15 to leave the top seed with it all to do.

Sabalenka avoids the breadstick with a much-needed hold to love.

Osaka will now look to serve out the opener.

Naomi surges 40-15 up but drags a crosscourt backhand just wide and then jabs a risky one up the line into the net.

The Japanese shrugs off the lapse and dictates with the forehand, taking care with a venomous forecourt strike off that wing to take charge again at deuce.

The 14th seed then saves the best until last with an absolute howitzer of a forehand down the line that leaves Sabalenka rooted to the spot and sees her back up the double break in style.
