Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike) is the big favourite to be wearing the pink jersey in Rome as he aims to use the race as a launchpad for the Tour de France later this summer.

The Dane is mixing up his programme in 2026 after finishing a distant second to Tadej Pogacar (UAE Team Emirates-XRG) in the past two Tours.

Stage 1 of the 2026 Giro was won by Paul Magnier (Soudal Quick-Step), and he repeated the feat in a sprint finish in Stage 3, which followed on from a crash-marred Stage 2 which went to Guillermo Thomas Silva of XDS Astana.

The race resumed on Tuesday with Stage 4, which saw UAE's Jhonatan Narvaez take victory and Lidl-Trek's Giulio Ciccone move into the pink jersey.

Stage 5 was an absolute thriller in which Igor Arrieta claimed another win for UAE. After recovering from a late crash and an even later wrong turn, Arrieta hunted down and pipped Eulalio (Bahrain-Victorious) to the line in what was a stage for the ages.

The drama continued with a cobbled finish on Stage 6 that split opinion before Vingegaard made his move on Stage 7, winning the first major summit finish of this year's Giro to close the gap at the top of the GC.

Narvaez then claimed a thrilling second win on Stage 8 as a depleted UAE continued to defy the odds.

Vingegaard took Stage 9 before Filippo Ganna won Tuesday's ITT stage, and Narvaez completed his hat-trick on Wednesday after getting the better of Enric Mas in a two-way sprint.

Bahrain Victorious continued their fantastic Giro campaign as Alec Segaert captured his maiden Grand Tour stage victory with a stunning late attack in Stage 12.

Home favourite Alberto Bettiol claimed a superb third stage win for Astana XDS on Stage 13, launching a blistering attack from the breakaway to soar clear.

The leadership of the race changed hands on Stage 14, as Vingegaard powered away to take the maglia rosa.

Stage 15 was expected to be a day for the sprinters, but a four-rider group held off the peloton as Fredrik Dversnes took an unlikely victory.

After the third rest day, Vingegaard decimated the field on the final climb of Stage 16 to claim his first win in the pink jersey, before his fellow Danish rider Michael Valgren stormed to a maiden Grand Tour victory on Stage 17.

Magnier denied Milan again in a thrilling Stage 18 finish, before Vingegaard took an iron grip of the pink jersey in the mountains as team-mate Sepp Kuss took Stage 19 before the Dane claimed a record fifth stage win on Stage 20 to go on the cusp of history.

The 109th edition of the Giro d'Italia started on Friday, May 8 in Nesebar on Bulgaria's Black Sea coast.

After three stages, it has moved to Italian soil. Spanning 21 stages over 24 days, the race concludes in Rome on Sunday, May 31.
