Real Madrid are holding their breath over the fitness of Kylian Mbappe as they edge toward a season-defining UEFA Champions League last-16 tie against Manchester City this month, live on TNT Sports and discovery+.

Mbappe has been nursing a knee problem, which ruled him out of the second leg of their play-off victory over Benfica last Wednesday.

No comeback date has been publicly pencilled in, with Madrid hosting City on March 11 in the first leg of their last-16 encounter.

Instead, Mbappe’s recovery is being monitored at Valdebebas, away from the spotlight and the speculation.

Speaking ahead of his side's La Liga encounter with Getafe on Monday, head coach Alvaro Arbeloa stated there will be no reckless gamble on their star forward in the fortnight ahead.

"We are going to take it day by day," Arbeloa said. "It's a matter of him seeing how he's feeling, how he's recovering, how the progress is going.

"I believe it's better not to set deadlines right now. It's very clear to us: what's wrong, and what we want now. It's basically some discomfort he's suffering that we have to assess daily to see how he's feeling and, based on that, we'll make decisions.

"We want him to return 100% recovered and, only when that happens, and that discomfort has disappeared, he'll be back."

Arbeloa also dismissed suggestions of tension after Mbappe was absent from the Bernabeu for Madrid’s European outing against Benfica, insisting there was no hidden storyline.

"He was not there because he had permission from his coach," added Arbeloa.

While the Frenchman's fitness remains a concern, Madrid's attacking options hardly depend on one individual.

Vinicius Junior remains central to the side’s identity, and Arbeloa was quick to shift the spotlight when asked about the Brazilian’s resurgence.

"I don’t know if I’ve hit any key points," he said, reflecting on his role. "The credit goes to Vinicius Junior, who is a fantastic, extraordinary footballer.

"My only merit, if I have any, is giving him confidence and support - making sure his team-mates look for him and find him in situations where he can show his talent and his greatest qualities."

There is further encouragement in the return of Rodrygo to full fitness. His ability to operate across the front line provides flexibility at a pivotal moment in the campaign.

"He is very important," Arbeloa said. "He already was before the injury. He can be decisive. He’s shown his quality for many years and what he can offer in all three attacking positions. He’s complete, difficult to defend. He will give us many possibilities. I was eager to have him back."

Madrid head into the Getafe fixture four points adrift of title rivals Barcelona, who strengthened their position with a commanding 4-1 victory over Villarreal on Saturday.

Attention then quickly turns to Friday’s trip to Celta Vigo, another test that leaves little margin for error in the title race.

The heavyweight European night in the Spanish capital against City is still 10 days away, but the prospect of an 11th meeting since April 2022 is one which Arbeloa is relishing.

"I think it's going to be an exciting duel between two great clubs," he reflected on Friday's draw.

"I believe it's a match-up that Madrid fans really enjoy at the Bernabeu because of the opponent's stature, and obviously, when the time comes, we'll prepare to the fullest, knowing the demands it will entail."
