Eduardo Camavinga to miss UEFA Super Cup and start of Real Madrid's La Liga title defence through injury

Real Madrid will be without midfielder Eduardo Camavinga for the UEFA Super Cup and the start of their La Liga title defence after he suffered a knee injury in training.

The France international slipped on the turf and then clashed with his team-mate Aurelien Tchouameni in a practice session ahead of Wednesday night's Super Cup.

Carlo Ancelotti’s side take on Atalanta in the annual match between the winners of the UEFA Champions League and UEFA Europa League.

The fixture will be played at the Warsaw National Stadium in Poland - which is where Real were training when Camavinga got injured. After receiving a medical report, Real Madrid announced the findings in a statement.

It said: “Following tests carried out today on our player Eduardo Camavinga, he has been diagnosed with a sprained internal collateral ligament in his left knee. His recovery will be monitored.”

Real have not put an expected time frame on his recovery, but it will be a blow to Ancelotti’s plans for the new season given Camavinga's key role last season, making 46 appearances in all competitions.

Taking to social media, the France midfielder wrote: “Deeply disappointed to pick up this injury and miss the start of the season. I will work hard to be back soon.

“Thank you for all the messages of support over the last few hours and also want to wish the team well for the game tonight! Always thanks God.”

Marquee summer signing Kylian Mbappe is expected to make his competitive debut against Atalanta, while fellow new boy Endrick is also in the squad following his arrival from Palmeiras.

Following the match in Poland, Real’s attention will swiftly turn to beginning their La Liga title defence, which begins with a trip to Mallorca on August 18.
