Lamine Yamal has beaten Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo to another UEFA Champions League record after scoring a second goal against Newcastle United in their last 16 tie with the Premier League side. The 18-year-old's penalty at Camp Nou on Wednesday ensured he pipped Real Madrid star Kylian Mbappe with his latest achievement on Europe's biggest stage.

It was seven of the best from Barcelona as they thrashed Newcastle United 7-2 on Wednesday to progress to the UEFA Champions League quarter-finals.

Raphinha, Marc Bernal, Fermin Lopez and Robert Lewandowski were on the scoresheet, as was 18-year-old starlet Lamine Yamal, who broke another goalscoring record in the process.

Before the game, Yamal was described as "sensational" by TNT Sports commentator and former Newcastle goalkeeper Shay Given, who tipped him to become "the next Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo".

Barca and Newcastle could not be separated in the opening 30 minutes of Wednesday's game at Camp Nou, as Anthony Elanga's double cancelled out goals from Raphinha and Bernal.

But on the stroke of half-time, Yamal - who scored a 96th-minute penalty in the first leg to rescue a 1-1 draw for the Catalans - stepped up from 12 yards again when Barca were awarded a penalty for Kieran Tripper's foul on Raphinha.

The teenager coolly dispatched the penalty into the bottom right corner, despite a slight touch from Aaron Ramsdale, to put Barcelona 3-2 ahead with his fifth goal in the Champions League this season.

The goal matched his tally from last season during Barcelona's run to the last eight, which means his 10 strikes overall makes him the youngest player in history to score 10+ Champions League goals.

He was compared to legendary duo Messi and Ronaldo before the game, and by the end of it, he had beaten both of their records, reaching double figures at the age of 18 years and 248 days old.

Messi and Ronaldo are both in the top 10 youngest players to achieve the feat, as are the likes of Erling Haaland, Wayne Rooney, Karim Benzema and Raul.

Hansi Flick's side dominated their Premier League opponents to ease into the quarter-finals.

Barcelona scored four more goals in the second half to advance 8-3 on aggregate, and will play Atletico Madrid for a place in the semi-finals.

Should they advance, they could meet favourites Arsenal, who defeated Bayer Leverkusen to book a meeting with Sporting in the last eight.
